Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Mazda Protege5 and 2003 Mazda Protege. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Verify Related Repair Information Availability -  Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to DLC-2. Turn ignition on, engine off. Check service bulletins for repair information related to this DTC. If repair information is not available, go to next step. If repair information is available, perform diagnosis and repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  11.
  2. Classify Intermittent Concern Or Continuous Concern -  Turn ignition off and then on. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P1496 is present, go to next step. If DTC P1496 is not present, problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  3. Classify Power Circuit Or Control Circuit Malfunction -  If DTC P1497 is also present, EGR valve or power circuit malfunction is present. Go to next step. If DTC P1497 is not present, EGR valve or control circuit malfunction is present. Go to step  6.
  4. Classify Power Circuit Or Control Circuit Malfunction -  Turn ignition off. Disconnect EGR valve 6-pin harness connector. Check for poor connection due to damaged, pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc. If no problem is found, go to next step. If any problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  11.
  5. Inspect Power Circuit For Open Circuit -  Turn ignition on, engine off. Measure voltage between ground and EGR valve 6-pin harness connector terminal "C" (White/Red wire). See Fig 1. If battery voltage is not present, repair open circuit in White/Red wire between EGR valve 6-pin harness connector terminal "C" and main relay 4-pin harness connector terminal "D". See appropriate WIRING DIAGRAM under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS. After repair, go to step  11. If battery voltage is present, check EGR valve coils No. 1 and 2. See EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION SYSTEM under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - MAZDA6, MIATA, MPV, PROTEGE & PROTEGE5 article. If any coil circuits are faulty, replace EGR valve. After repair, go to step  11. If coil circuits are not faulty, go to step  11.

  6. Inspect EGR Valve For Poor Connection -  Turn ignition off. Disconnect EGR valve 6-pin harness connector. Check for poor connection due to damaged, pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc. If any problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  11. If no problem is found, go to next step.
  7. Inspect EGR Valve -  Check resistance between EGR valve terminals "C" and "E". See Fig 2. If resistance reading is 20-24 ohms, go to next step. If resistance reading is not as specified, replace EGR valve. After repair, go to step  11.

  8. Inspect PCM Connector For Poor Connection -  Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Check for poor connection due to damaged, pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc. If no problem is found, go to next step. If any problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  11.
  9. Inspect Control Circuit For Short -  Check continuity between ground and EGR valve 6-pin harness connector terminal "E" (Brown/White wire). See Fig 1. If continuity is present, repair short circuit to ground in Brown/White wire between EGR valve 6-pin harness connector terminal "E" and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 68. See appropriate WIRING DIAGRAM under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS. After repair, go to step  11. If continuity is not present, measure voltage between ground and EGR valve 6-pin harness connector terminal "E" (Brown/White wire). If voltage is about zero, go to next step. If battery voltage is present, repair short circuit to power in Brown/White wire between EGR valve 6-pin harness connector terminal "E" and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 68. After repair, go to next step.
  10. Inspect Control Circuit For Open Circuit -  Connect 104-pin Breakout Box (49-UN01-130) to PCM harness connector only. See Figure. Check for continuity between EGR valve 6-pin harness connector terminal "E" (Brown/White wire) and breakout box terminal No. 68. See Fig 1. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair open circuit in Brown/White wire between EGR valve 6-pin harness connector terminal "E" and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 68. After repair, go to next step.
  11. Verify Trouble Shooting Of DTC P1496 Completed -  Reconnect all connectors. Turn ignition off, then on. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P1496 is present, replace PCM. For PCM removal and installation, see POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. After repair, go to next step. If same DTC P1496 is not present, go to next step.
  12. Verify After Repair Procedure -  Using scan tool, perform After Repair Procedure. See AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE . If no other DTCs are present, testing is complete. If any other DTC is present, follow appropriate DTC diagnostic procedure. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
