Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Verify Related Repair Information Availability -  Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to DLC-2. Turn ignition on, engine off. Monitor for FREEZE FRAME DATA and ensure data has been recorded. Check service bulletins for repair information related to this DTC. If repair information is not available, go to next step. If repair information is available, perform diagnosis and repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  13.
  2. Classify Intermittent Concern Or Continuous Concern -  Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P0505 is present, go to next step. If DTC P0505 is not present, problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  3. Inspect IAC Valve Connector For Poor Connection -  Turn ignition off. Disconnect IAC valve 2-pin harness connector. Check for poor connection due to damaged, pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc. If all terminals are okay, go to next step. If any terminals are not okay, repair or replace as necessary. After repair, go to step  13.
  4. Inspect IAC Valve Electrical Malfunction -  Measure resistance between IAC valve terminals. If resistance reading is 8.7-10.5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance reading is not as specified, replace IAC valve. After repair, go to step  13.
  5. Classify Malfunction At Power Supply Circuit Or Control Circuit -  Turn ignition on, engine off. Measure voltage between ground and IAC valve harness connector terminal "A" (Brown wire). If battery voltage is not present, go to next step. If battery voltage is present, go to step  9.
  6. Inspect PCM Connector For Poor Connection -  Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Check for poor connection due to damaged, pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc. If all terminals are okay, go to next step. If any terminals are faulty, repair or replace as necessary. After repair, go to step  13.
  7. Inspect Power Circuit For Short To Ground -  Turn ignition off. Check for continuity between ground and IAC valve harness connector terminal "A" (Brown wire). If continuity is not present, go to next step. If continuity is present, repair short circuit to ground in Brown wire between IAC valve harness connector terminal "A" and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 54. See appropriate WIRING DIAGRAM under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS. After repair, go to step  13.
  8. Inspect Power Circuit For Open Circuit -  Turn ignition off. Connect 104-pin Breakout Box (49-UN01-130) to PCM 104-pin harness connector only. See Figure. Check for continuity in Brown wire between IAC valve harness connector terminal "A" and breakout box terminal No. 54. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair or replace harness for open circuit in Brown wire between IAC valve harness connector terminal "A" and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 54. After repair, go to step  13.
  9. Inspect PCM Connector For Poor Connection -  Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Check for poor connection due to damaged, pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc. If all terminals are okay, go to next step. If any terminals are faulty, repair or replace as necessary. After repair, go to step  13.
  10. Inspect Control Circuit For Short To Power -  Turn ignition on, engine off. Measure voltage between ground and IAC valve harness connector terminal "B" (Gray wire). If battery voltage is not present, go to next step. If battery voltage is present, repair short circuit to power in Gray wire between IAC valve harness connector terminal "B" and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 83. After repair, go to step  13.
  11. Inspect Control Circuit For Short To Ground -  Turn ignition off. Check for continuity between ground and IAC valve harness connector terminal "B" (Gray wire). If continuity is present, repair short circuit to ground Gray wire between IAC valve harness connector terminal "B" and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 83. After repair, go to step  13. If continuity is not present, go to next step.
  12. Inspect Control Circuit Malfunction For Open Circuit -  Turn ignition off. Connect 104-pin Breakout Box (49-UN01-130) to PCM 104-pin harness connector only. See Figure. Check for continuity in Gray wire between IAC valve harness connector terminal "B" and breakout box terminal No. 83. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair open circuit in Gray wire between IAC valve harness connector terminal "B" and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 83. After repair, go to next step.
  13. Verify Trouble Shooting Of DTC P0505 Completed -  Reconnect all connectors. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Start engine and warm up completely. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P0505 is present, replace PCM. For PCM removal and installation, see POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. After repair, go to next step. If same DTC P0505 is not present, go to next step.
  14. Verify After Repair Procedure -  Using scan tool, perform After Repair Procedure. See AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE . If no other DTCs are present, testing is complete. If any other DTC is present, follow appropriate DTC diagnostic procedure. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
