Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Verify Related Repair Information Availability -  Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to DLC-2. Turn ignition on, engine off. Monitor for FREEZE FRAME DATA and ensure data has been recorded. Check service bulletins for repair information related to this DTC. If repair information is not available, go to next step. If repair information is available, perform diagnosis and repair as necessary. After repair, go to next step.
  2. Verify CMP Sensor Voltage -  Disconnect CMP 2-pin sensor harness connector. Connect voltmeter between CMP sensor terminals. Check for AC voltage while cranking engine. If AC voltage is not present, go to next step. If any AC voltage is present, go to step  4.
  3. Check CMP Sensor Resistance -  Check resistance between CMP sensor terminals. If resistance is 950-1250 ohms, repair poor connection at CMP sensor harness connector. After repair, go to step  9. If resistance is not as specified, replace CMP sensor. After repair, go to step  9.
  4. Inspect PCM Connector For Poor Connection -  Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Check for poor connection due to damaged, pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  9.
  5. Inspect CMP Circuit For Open Circuit -  Check continuity of Blue wire between CMP sensor harness connector terminal "A" and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 85. See Figure. Check continuity of Green wire between CMP sensor harness connector terminal "B" and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 86. If continuity is present in both wires, go to next step. If continuity is not present in either wire, repair open circuit in suspect wire harness. After repair, go to step  9.
  6. Inspect CMP Circuit For Short To Ground -  Check for continuity between ground and CMP sensor harness connector terminal "A" (Blue wire). Check for continuity between ground and CMP sensor harness connector terminal "B" (Green wire). If continuity is not present in both wires, go to next step. If continuity is present in either wire, repair short circuit to ground in suspected wire harness. After repair, go to step  9.
  7. Inspect CMP Circuits For Intermediate Short -  Check for continuity between CMP sensor harness connector terminals. If continuity is not present, go to next step. If continuity is present, repair or replace short circuit in suspected wire harness. After repair, go to step  9.
  8. Inspect CKP Sensor -  Check CKP sensor operation. See CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR under SENSORS & SWITCHES in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - MAZDA6, MIATA, MPV, PROTEGE & PROTEGE5 article. If CKP sensor is okay, go to next step. If CKP sensor is faulty, replace CKP sensor. After repair, go to next step.
  9. Verify Trouble Shooting Of DTC P0340 Completed -  Reconnect all connectors. Turn ignition on, engine off. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Start engine. Ensure MAF reading is more than 2.2 grams/sec. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P0340 is present, replace PCM. For PCM removal and installation, see POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. After repair, go to next step. If same DTC P0340 is not present, go to next step.
  10. Verify After Repair Procedure -  Using scan tool, perform After Repair Procedure. See AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE . If no other DTCs are present, testing is complete. If any other DTC is present, follow appropriate DTC diagnostic procedure. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
