Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

- Verify Related Repair Information Availability - Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to DLC-2. Turn ignition on, engine off. Monitor for FREEZE FRAME DATA and ensure data has been recorded. Check service bulletins for repair information related to this DTC. If repair information is not available, go to next step. If repair information is available, perform diagnosis and repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 8.
- Verify Stored DTC - Turn ignition off, then start engine. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If DTC P1487 is not present, go to next step. If DTC P1487 is present, diagnose and repair as necessary. See DTC P1487: EGR BOOST SENSOR SOLENOID VALVE CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION .
- Identify Trigger DTC For Freeze Frame Data - Check for DTCs in FREEZE FRAME data. If DTC P0106 is present, go to next step. If DTC other than P0106 is present, go to diagnostic procedure for DTC that did trigger freeze frame data. Refer to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
- Inspect Connection Of EGR Boost Sensing Related Vacuum Hoses -
Check for loose, damaged, misrouted or plugged vacuum hoses:
- Between EGR boost sensor and EGR boost sensor solenoid valve.
- Between EGR boost sensor solenoid valve and intake manifold.
If vacuum hoses are okay, go to next step. If any problem is present, repair or replace as necessary. After repair, go to step 8.
- Inspect EGR Boost Sensor Solenoid Air Filter For Clogging - Check for plugged EGR boost sensor air filter. If EGR boost sensor air filter is clogged. Repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 8. If EGR boost sensor air filter is okay, go to next step.
- Inspect EGR Boost Sensor Solenoid Valve For Whether Stuck Open Or Closed - Check EGR boost sensor solenoid valve operation. See EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION SYSTEM under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - MAZDA6, MIATA, MPV, PROTEGE & PROTEGE5 article. If EGR boost sensor solenoid valve operates correctly, go to next step. If EGR boost sensor solenoid valve does not operate correctly, replace EGR boost sensor solenoid valve. After repair, go to step 8.
- Inspect EGR Boost Sensor For Whether Stuck Open Or Closed - Check EGR boost sensor operation. See EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION SYSTEM under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - MAZDA6, MIATA, MPV, PROTEGE & PROTEGE5 article. If EGR boost sensor is faulty, replace EGR boost sensor. After repair, go to next step. If EGR boost sensor is okay, go to next step.
- Verify Trouble shooting Of DTC P0106 Completed - Reconnect all connectors. Turn ignition on, engine off. Clear DTC from memory. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Perform Drive Mode 1: PCM adaptive memory, Drive Mode 2: EGR System Repair Verification and Drive Mode 3: HO2S, HO2S Heater & TWC Repair Verification. See DRIVE MODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Recheck for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P0106 is still present, replace PCM. For PCM removal and installation, see POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. After repair, go to next step. If same DTC P0106 is not present, go to next step.
- Verify After Repair Procedure - Using scan tool, perform After Repair Procedure. See AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE . If no other DTCs are present, testing is complete. If any other DTC is present, follow appropriate DTC diagnostic procedure. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
