Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

- Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to DLC-2. Turn ignition on, engine off. Check service bulletins for repair information related to this DTC. If repair information is not available, go to next step. If repair information is available, perform diagnosis and repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 11.
- Turn ignition switch off and then on. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P1498 is present, go to next step. If DTC P1498 is not present, problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
- If DTC P1499 is also present, EGR valve or power circuit malfunction is present. Go to next step. If DTC P1499 is not present, EGR valve or control circuit malfunction is present. Go to step 6.
- Turn ignition switch off. Disconnect EGR valve 6-pin harness connector. Check for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If any problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 11. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch on. Measure voltage between ground and EGR valve 6-pin harness connector terminal "D" (White/Red wire). See Figure. If battery voltage is not present, repair open circuit in White/Red wire between EGR valve 6-pin harness connector terminal "D" and main relay. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. After repair, go to step 11. If battery voltage is present, check EGR valve coils No. 3 and 4. See EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION SYSTEM under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - MIATA, MILLENIA, MPV, PROTEGE, PROTEGE5 & 626 article. If any coil circuits are faulty, replace EGR valve. After repair, go to step 11. If coil circuits are not faulty, go to step 11.
- Turn ignition switch off. Disconnect EGR valve 6-pin harness connector. Check for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If any problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 11. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Check resistance between EGR valve terminals "B" and "D". See Figure. If resistance is 20-24 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 20-24 ohms, replace EGR valve. After repair, go to step 11.
- Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Check for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If any problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 11. If no problem is found, go to next step.
- Check continuity between ground and EGR valve 6-pin harness connector terminal "B" (Light Green wire). See Figure. If continuity is present, repair short to ground in Light Green wire between EGR valve 6-pin harness connector terminal "B" and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 46. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. After repair, go to step 11. If continuity is not present, measure voltage between ground and EGR valve 6-pin harness connector terminal "B" (Light Green wire). If battery voltage is not present, go to next step. If battery voltage is present, repair short to power in Light Green wire between EGR valve 6-pin harness connector and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 46. After repair, go to next step.
- Connect 104-pin Breakout Box (49-UN01-130) to PCM harness connector only. See Figure. Check for continuity between EGR valve 6-pin harness connector terminal "B" (Light Green wire) and breakout box terminal No. 46. See Figure. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair open in Light Green wire between PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 46 and EGR valve 6-pin harness connector terminal "B". After repair, go to next step.
- Reconnect all connectors. Turn ignition switch off and then on. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P1498 is present, replace PCM and go to next step. If DTC P1498 is not present, go to next step.
- Cycle ignition switch from off to on. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no other DTCs are present, testing is complete. If any other DTC is present, go to applicable test and repair.
