Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to DLC-2. Turn ignition on, engine off. Monitor for FREEZE FRAME DATA and ensure data has been recorded. Check service bulletins for repair information related to this DTC. If repair information is not available, go to next step. If repair information is available, perform diagnosis and repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  13.
  2. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P0505 is present, go to next step. If DTC P0505 is not present, problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  3. Turn ignition switch off. Disconnect IAC valve harness connector. Check for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If all terminals are okay, go to next step. If any terminals are not okay, repair or replace as necessary. After repair, go to step  13.
  4. Measure resistance between IAC valve terminals "A" and "B". If resistance is 8.7-10.5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace IAC valve. After repair, go to step  13.
  5. Turn ignition switch on, engine off. Measure voltage between ground and IAC valve harness connector terminal "A" (Brown wire). If battery voltage is present, go to step  9. If battery voltage is not present, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition switch off. Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Check for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If all terminals are okay, go to next step. If any terminals are faulty, repair or replace as necessary. After repair, go to step  13.
  7. Turn ignition switch off. Check for continuity between ground and IAC valve harness connector terminal "A" (Brown wire). If continuity is present, repair short to ground in Brown wire between IAC valve harness connector terminal "A" and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 54. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. After repair, go to step  13. If continuity is not present, go to next step.
  8. Turn ignition switch off. Connect 104-pin Breakout Box (49-UN01-130) to PCM 104-pin harness connector only. See Figure. Check for continuity in Brown wire between IAC valve harness connector terminal "A" and 104-pin breakout box terminal No. 54. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair or replace harness for open circuit in Brown wire between IAC valve harness connector terminal "A" and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 54. After repair, go to step  13.
  9. Turn ignition switch off. Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Check for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If all terminals are okay, go to next step. If any terminals are faulty, repair or replace as necessary. After repair, go to step  13.
  10. Turn ignition switch on, engine off. Measure voltage between ground and IAC valve harness connector terminal "B" (Gray wire). If battery voltage is not present, go to next step. If battery voltage is present, repair or replace wire harness for short to power in Gray wire between IAC valve harness connector terminal "B" and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 83. After repair, go to step  13.
  11. Turn ignition switch off. Check for continuity between ground and IAC valve harness connector terminal "B" (Gray wire). If continuity is present, repair or replace Gray wire for short to ground. After repair, go to step  13. If continuity is not present, go to next step.
  12. Turn ignition switch off. Connect 104-pin Breakout Box (49-UN01-130) to PCM 104-pin harness connector only. See Figure. Check for continuity in Gray wire between IAC valve harness connector terminal "B" and 104-pin breakout box terminal No. 83. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair or replace harness for open circuit in Gray wire between IAC valve harness connector terminal "B" and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 83. After repair, go to next step.
  13. Reconnect all connectors. Turn ignition switch on. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Start engine and warm up completely. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P0505 is present, replace PCM and go to next step. If DTC P0505 is not present, go to next step.
  14. Cycle ignition switch from off to on. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no other DTCs are present, testing is complete. If any other DTC is present, go to applicable test and repair.
