Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to DLC-2. Turn ignition on, engine off. Monitor for FREEZE FRAME DATA and ensure data has been recorded. Check service bulletins for repair information related to this DTC. If repair information is not available, go to next step. If repair information is available, perform diagnosis and repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  10.
  2. Start engine. Using scan tool, access VS PID data. Drive vehicle at 12.4 and 24.8 MPH. If PID and vehicle speed does not match, go to next step. If PID and vehicle speed matches, problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  3. Turn ignition switch on, engine off. Check for instrument cluster DTCs. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If no DTCs are present, go to next step. If DTC No. 10 or 12 are present, diagnose and repair as necessary.
  4. Turn ignition switch off. Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Check connector for loose or damaged terminals, poor contact or corrosion. If no problems are found, go to next step. If any problems are found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  10.
  5. Disconnect cruise control module 16-pin harness connector. Inspect all harness connector terminals for poor loose, damaged, or corroded terminals. If no problems are found, go to next step. If any problems are found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  10.
  6. Disconnect instrument cluster connectors. Inspect all harness connectors for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If no problems are found, go to next step. If any problems are found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  10.
  7. Connect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Turn ignition switch on, engine off. Measure voltage at instrument cluster 20-pin harness connector terminal No. 3O (Green/Red wire). If 5 volts is not present, go to next step. If 5 volts is present, replace instrument cluster. After repair, go to step  10.
  8. Turn ignition switch off. Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Check continuity of Green/Red wire between PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 58 and instrument cluster 20-pin harness connector terminal No. 3O. See Figure. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair open in Green/Red wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to step  10.
  9. Check continuity between instrument cluster harness connector 3O (Green/Red wire) and ground. If continuity is present, repair short to ground in Green/Red wire between instrument cluster and PCM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to next step. If continuity is not present, replace instrument cluster and go to next step.
  10. Reconnect all connectors. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Using scan tool, access PID data for LOAD and RPM. Drive vehicle for with LOAD PID at 40 percent or more and engine speed at 1800 RPM or more. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P0500 is present, replace PCM and go to next step. If DTC P0500 is not present, go to next step.
  11. Cycle ignition switch from off to on. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no other DTCs are present, testing is complete. If any other DTC is present, go to applicable test and repair.
