Possible Causes

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Mazda 6. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Fuse No. 1 (METER IG, 15 amp) malfunction, instrument cluster malfunction, improper connection of connectors between instrument cluster and SAS control module, open or short circuit in wiring harness between fuse No. 1 and SAS control module or SAS control module malfunction.

  1. Inspect fuse No. 1

    Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Remove fuse No. 1 and inspect fuse. See Figure . If fuse No. 1 is okay, reinstall fuse and go to next step. If fuse is not okay, replace fuse.

  2. Inspect for continuity between fuse No. 1 and instrument cluster

    Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster connector No. 2, terminal No. 2V. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. See Figure . If voltage is more than 9 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 9 volts, replace wiring harness between fuse No. 1 and instrument cluster.

  3. Inspect wiring harness between instrument cluster and SAS control module

    Turn ignition to LOCK position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Remove steering column cover and disconnect clockspring connector. Remove glove compartment and disconnect passenger-side air bag module connectors. On models equipped with side air bags, disconnect right and left side air bag module connectors. On models equipped with side curtain air bags, disconnect right and left side curtain air bag module connectors. On models equipped with seat belt pretensioners, remove right and left lower B-pillar trims and disconnect seat belt pretensioner connectors. On all models, disconnect all SAS control module connectors. Disconnect instrument cluster connectors. Measure for short to ground, short to power or open circuit between SAS control module connector No. 1, terminal No. 1T and instrument cluster connector No. 1, terminal No. 1O. See Figure & Figure . If short to ground, short to power or open circuit is detected, replace wiring harness. If wiring harness is okay, go to next step.

  4. Inspect AIR BAG warning light

    Connect instrument cluster connectors. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Inspect AIR BAG warning light. If AIR BAG warning light is illuminated, go to next step. If AIR BAG warning light is not illuminated, replace instrument cluster.

  5. Inspect AIR BAG warning light

    Connect a jumper wire between ground and instrument cluster connector No. 1, terminal No. 1O. Inspect AIR BAG warning light. If AIR BAG warning light goes out and performing present malfunction diagnosis, replace SAS control module. See SAS CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If seat belt warning light goes out and performing past malfunction diagnosis, test is complete. If AIR BAG warning light stays on, replace instrument cluster.
