Test No. 4: Tachometer Inoperative

  1. Ensure ignition switch is in LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable. After more than 30 seconds, reconnect negative battery cable. Cycle ignition switch to ON position, then LOCK position, 3 times. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Push trip reset button 3 times. Push trip reset button until DTC 13 is reached. If tachometer needle moves full scale and then rests at 3000 RPM, go to next step. If tachometer needle does not move full scale and then rest at 3000 RPM, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  2. Push trip reset button until DTC 11 is reached. Start engine and drive vehicle. If LCD indicates ON, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If LCD does not indicate ON, go to next step.
  3. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector No. 2, terminal 2I. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step  5 .
  4. Disconnect instrument cluster connector. Check for continuity between instrument cluster connector No. 2, terminal 2I and instrument cluster connector No. 4, terminal 4C. See Figure and Figure . If continuity exists, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If continuity does not exist, replace printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  5. Remove rear console. Connect Jumper Box (49-UN01-130) to PCM connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and jumper box terminal No. 48. If voltage is more than 10 volts, repair wiring between PCM and instrument cluster. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to next step.
  6. Check for engine DTCs. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 626 - 2.0L or SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 626 - 2.5L in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If DTC P0320 exists, perform diagnosis for that DTC. If DTC P0320 does not exist, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
