Diagnostic Procedures

- DTC P1461: Check ACP V PID - Connect scan tool to DLC. Turn ignition on, engine off. Access ACP V PID. If ACP V PID reading is less than 4.9 volts, go to step 13. If ACP V PID reading is not as specified, go to next step.
- Check Voltage Between VREF & SIG RTN Circuits To ACP Sensor - Disconnect ACP sensor 4-pin harness connector. Turn ignition on, engine off. Measure voltage between VERF (Dark Green/Orange wire) and SIG RTN (Black/Yellow wire) circuits at ACP sensor harness connector. See Fig 1. If voltage reading is 4-6 volts, go to next step. If voltage reading is not as specified, VREF is out of range or SIG RTN circuit to ACP sensor is open. Repair circuit. After repair, retest.
- Induce Opposite ACP Signal - Turn ignition on, engine off. Access ACP V PID. If ACP PID is now less than 4.9 volts, replace ACP sensor. After repair, start engine. Turn A/C on, wait 15 seconds and turn A/C off. Rerun Self-Test. If ACP PID reading is not as specified, go to next step.
- Check ACP Circuit For Short To VREF In Harness - Disconnect scan tool from DLC. Disconnect PCM. Measure resistance between ACP (Red/Yellow wire) and VREF (Dark Green/Orange wire) circuits at ACP sensor 4-pin harness connector. If resistance reading is more than 10,000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance reading is not as specified, repair short circuit. After repair, rerun Self-Test.
- Check ACP Circuit For Short To Power In Harness - Turn ignition on, engine off. Measure voltage between ground and ACP circuit (Red/Yellow wire) at ACP sensor 4-pin harness connector terminal No. 4. See Fig 2. If voltage reading is less than one volt, replace PCM. After repair, start engine. Turn A/C on, wait 15 seconds and turn A/C off. Rerun Self-Test. If voltage reading is not as specified, repair short circuit in Red/Yellow wire between ACP sensor 4-pin harness connector terminal No. 4 and A/C cycling pressure switch 4-pin harness connector. After repair, start engine. Turn A/C on, wait 15 seconds and turn A/C off. Rerun Self-Test.
- DTC P1462: Check ACP V PID - Connect scan tool to DLC. Turn ignition on, engine off. Access ACP V PID. If ACP V PID reading is more than 0.15 volt, go to step 13. If ACP V PID reading is not as specified, go to next step.
- Check Voltage Between VREF & SIG RTN To ACP Sensor - Disconnect ACP sensor 4-pin harness connector. Turn ignition on, engine off. Measure voltage between VREF (Dark Green/Orange wire) and SIG RTN (Black/Yellow wire) circuits at ACP sensor 4-pin harness connector. See Fig 1. If voltage reading is 4-6 volts, go to next step. If voltage reading is not as specified, VREF is out of range or SIG RTN circuit (Black/Yellow wire) to ACP sensor is open. Repair circuit. After repair, retest.
- Induce Opposite ACP Signal - Connect fused jumper wire between ACP (Red/Yellow wire) and VREF (Dark Green/Orange wire) circuits at ACP sensor 4-pin harness connector. Turn ignition on, engine off. Access ACP V PID. If ACP PID reading is now less than 4 volts, replace ACP sensor. After repair, start engine. Turn A/C on, wait 15 seconds and turn A/C off. Rerun Self-Test. If ACP V PID reading is not as specified, go to next step.
- Check ACP Circuit For Short To Power, Ground Or SIG RTN In Harness - Turn ignition off. Disconnect scan tool from DLC. Measure resistance between ACP (Red/Yellow wire) and SIG RTN (Black/Yellow wire) circuits at ACP sensor 4-pin harness connector. Measure resistance between ACP circuit at ACP sensor 4-pin harness connector and battery. If both resistance readings are more than 10,000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance reading are not as specified, repair short circuit. After repair, start engine. Turn A/C on, wait 15 seconds and turn A/C off.
- Check ACP Circuit For Open In Harness - Measure resistance of ACP circuit (Red/Yellow wire) between A/C clutch cycling pressure switch 4-pin harness connector and ACP sensor 4-pin harness connector terminal No. 4. See Fig 2. If resistance reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance reading is not as specified, repair open circuit in Red/Yellow wire between ACP sensor 4-pin harness connector terminal No. 4 and A/C clutch cycling pressure switch 4-pin harness connector.
- Check For A/C Clutch To Engage - Reconnect ACP sensor 4-pin harness connector. Turn ignition on, engine off. While listening for A/C clutch to engage, turn A/C on. Repeat if necessary. Turn ignition off. If A/C clutch did not engage when A/C was turned on, go to next step. If A/C clutch engaged when A/C was turned on, replace PCM. After repair, start engine. Turn A/C on, wait 15 seconds and turn A/C off. Rerun Self-Test.
- Verify A/C System Has A Refrigerant Charge - Restore vehicle to original condition. Ensure A/C system has proper refrigerant charge. See appropriate MANUAL A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article in HEATING & AIR-CONDITIONING. If A/C system does have a refrigerant charge, replace PCM. After repair, start engine. Turn A/C on, wait 15 seconds and turn A/C off. Rerun Self-Test. If A/C system does not have a proper refrigerant charge, repair A/C system. After repair, start engine. Turn A/C on, wait 15 seconds and turn A/C off. Rerun Self-Test.
- Check For Intermittent ACP Circuit Fault -
Turn ignition on, engine off. Access ACP V PID. Observe ACP V PID for an indication of a fault while completing following.
- Shake, wiggle, bend ACP SIG RTN and VREF circuits between ACP sensor and PCM.
- Lightly tap on ACP sensor to simulate road shock.
- DTC 1463: Verify A/C Clutch Can Disengage - Ensure A/C and defroster are off. Start engine. Verify A/C clutch disengages. If A/C clutch is disengaged, go to next step. If A/C clutch does not disengage, refer to SYMPTOM TESTS in appropriate MANUAL A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article in HEATING & AIR-CONDITIONING.
- Check For Voltage & Ground To A/C Clutch (Using Non-Powered Test Lamp) - Disconnect A/C cycling pressure switch 4-pin harness connector. Install fused jumper wire between A/C cycling pressure switch 4-pin harness connector terminals (Red/Yellow and Violet wires) to complete circuit. Disconnect A/C clutch solenoid 2-pin harness connector. Connect a non-powered test lamp between power (Gray/White wire) and ground terminals (Black wire) at A/C compressor clutch harness connector. Start engine. Turn A/C ON, wait 15 seconds. Monitor test lamp. After testing, turn ignition off, remove fused jumper wire and reconnect A/C cycling pressure switch. If test lamp light was on, go to next step. If test light was not on, refer to SYMPTOM TESTS in appropriate MANUAL A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article in HEATING & AIR-CONDITIONING.
- Check If A Sufficient A/C Pressure Change Can Be Detected By ACP PID - Start engine. Turn A/C off. Access ACP V PID. Record ACP V PID voltage reading. While monitoring ACP V PID voltage reading, turn A/C on. Five seconds after A/C clutch engagement, note voltage reading. If ACP V PID voltage reading changed more than 0.3 volt within five seconds of clutch engagement, refer to SYMPTOM TESTS in appropriate MANUAL A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article in HEATING & AIR-CONDITIONING. If ACP V PID voltage reading did not change as specified, go to next step.
- Check A/C System Pressure & Pressure Change - Install A/C system manifold gauge set and check A/C system high pressure readings. Start engine. Turn A/C off. Note A/C high pressure reading. While monitoring A/C system high pressure reading, turn the A/C on. Five seconds after clutch engagement, note pressure reading (pressure should increase). Turn A/C off. If A/C pressure reading changed more than 30 psi (207 kPa) within five seconds of clutch engagement, go to next step. If A/C pressure reading did not change as specified, refer to SYMPTOM TESTS in appropriate MANUAL A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article in HEATING & AIR-CONDITIONING.
- Check Voltage Between VREF & SIG RTN To ACP Sensor - Disconnect ACP sensor 4-pin harness connector. Turn ignition on, engine off. Measure voltage between VREF (Dark Green/Orange wire) and SIG RTN (Black/Yellow wire) circuits at ACP sensor 4-pin harness connector. See Fig 1. If voltage reading is 4-6 volts, go to next step. If voltage reading is not as specified, VREF is out of range. Refer to VEHICLE REFERENCE VOLTAGE testing under SYSTEM TESTS.
- Check ACP Sensor For Open Circuit - Turn ignition off. With ACP sensor 4-pin harness connector is disconnected. Measure resistance of ACP sensor between terminals No. 1 and 4. Refer Fig 2. If resistance reading is less than 5 ohms, ACP sensor is okay, testing is complete. If resistance reading is not as specified, replace ACP sensor. After repair, start engine. Turn A/C on, wait 15 seconds and turn A/C off. Rerun Self-Test.
NOTE:
Verify A/C and defrost were OFF during Self-Test. If A/C or defrost were on, turn off and rerun Self-Test.
NOTE:
Refer to PCM connector terminal numbers in the beginning of this pinpoint test.
NOTE:
A fault will be indicated by a sudden change in ACP V PID voltage.
NOTE:
If voltage and ground to A/C clutch has already been checked, or the A/C clutch can be heard clicking on when A/C is turned on, go to question at the end of this test step.
NOTE:
If clutch does not engage, disregard at this time.
