Diagnostic Procedure

  1. If FREEZE FRAME DATA has been recorded, go to next step. If FREEZE FRAME DATA has not been recorded, record FREEZE FRAME DATA. Go to next step.
  2. Verify Related Repair Information Availability -  Check for related Service Bulletins and/or on-line repair information availability. If any related repair information is available, perform repair or diagnosis according to available repair information. If vehicle is not repaired, go to next step. If related repair information is not available, go to next step.
  3. Verify Related Pending Code Or Stored DTCs -  If DTC P2088 or P2089 is present, go to next step. If DTC P2092 or P2093 is present, perform appropriate DTC trouble shooting procedure. Refer to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
  4. Verify Engine Oil Pressure -  Start engine. If oil pressure warning light is illuminated, check engine oil pressure. Refer to appropriate article in ENGINES. If oil pressure light is not illuminated, go to next step.
  5. Verify Timing Chain Installation -  Stop engine. Remove timing chain cover. Refer to appropriate article in ENGINES. If camshaft timing mark is at correct point, go to next step. If camshaft timing mark is not at correct point, reinstall timing chain correctly. After repair, go to step  8.
  6. Inspect Right Side OCV For Malfunction -  Stop engine. Remove right side OCV. Refer to OIL CONTROL VALVE under VARIABLE VALVE TIMING SYSTEM in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION article. Inspect position of spool valve in right side OCV. If spool valve is located at valve retard position, go to next step. If spool valve is not located in the retard position, replace right side OCV. After repair, go to step  8.
  7. Inspect Engine Oil Runner -  Inspect following engine oil runners for clogging or leakage:
    • Between oil pressure switch and right side OCV
    • Between right side OCV and right side variable valve timing actuator
    • In right side variable valve timing actuator
    If there is any clogging or leakage, repair or replace suspected oil runner. After repair, go to next step. If there is no clogging or leakage, variable valve timing mechanism is normal. DTC is detected by intermittent concern. Intermittent concern might be removed by cleaning mode of variable valve timing control function. Go to next step.
  8. Verify Trouble Shooting Of DTC P0022 Is Completed -  Make sure to reconnect all disconnected connectors. Clear DTC from PCM memory using WDS or equivalent. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Turn ignition off. Start engine and warm it up completely. If same DTC is not present, go to next step. If same DTC is present, replace PCM. For PCM removal and installation, see POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION article. After repair, go to next step.
  9. Verify After Repair Procedure -  Using scan tool, perform After Repair Procedure. See AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE . If any DTCs are present, go to appropriate DTC inspection. Refer to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no DTCs are present, trouble shooting is complete.
