Diagnostic Procedures

- Record freeze frame data. Check for service bulletins and on-line information. Repair as necessary. After repair, go to next step.
- Verify Related Pending Or Stored DTCs - Turn ignition on, engine off. Check for any other related DTCs. If no other DTCs are present, go to next step. If any other DTCs are present, repair those DTCs first. Refer to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION .
- Inspect IAC Valve Malfunction - Perform IAC valve inspection. See IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE under IDLE CONTROL SYSTEM in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - MAZDA6, MIATA, MPV, PROTEGE & PROTEGE5 article. If IAC valve is okay, go to next step. If IAC valve is faulty, replace IAC valve. After repair, go to step 10.
- Inspect A/C Magnet Clutch Operation - Turn blower motor switch off. If A/C clutch is not engaged, go to next step. If A/C clutch is still engaged, diagnose and repair A/C control circuit. See SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. After repair, go to step 10.
- Inspect Purge Solenoid Valve Malfunction Perform purge solenoid valve inspection. See FUEL EVAPORATIVE SYSTEM (MPV) under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - MAZDA6, MIATA, MPV, PROTEGE & PROTEGE5 article. If purge solenoid valve is okay, go to next step. If purge solenoid valve is not okay, replace purge solenoid valve. After repair, go to step 10.
- Inspect Air Cleaner Element - Remove air cleaner element with engine running. If engine speed does not increase, go to next step. If engine speed increases, replace air cleaner element. After repair, go to step 10.
- Inspect Throttle Body Passage - Check throttle body passage. If throttle body is clear, go to next step. If throttle body is clogged, clean or replace throttle body. After repair, go to step 10.
- Inspect Engine Compression - Check engine compression. See MECHANICAL INSPECTION under PRELIMINARY INSPECTION & ADJUSTMENTS in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article. If compression is okay, go to next step. If compression is low, overhaul engine. Refer to appropriate MECHANICAL article in ENGINES. After repair, go to step 10.
- Inspect Generator - Perform generator inspection. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS - EXCEPT PICKUP & TRIBUTE article in ELECTRICAL. If generator is okay, go to next step. If generator is faulty, repair or replace as necessary. After repair, go to next step.
- Verify Trouble Shooting Of DTC P0506 Completed - Reconnect all disconnected connectors. Start engine. Using scan tool, clear DTC. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Depress brake pedal for 14.1 seconds or more. Recheck DTCs. If DTC P0506 is present, replace PCM. After repair, go to next step. If DTC P0506 is not present, go to next step.
- Verify After Repair Procedure - Using scan tool, perform after repair procedure. See AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE . If DTC is not present, testing is complete. If any DTC is present, go to appropriate test for diagnosis and repair.
