Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Mazda MPV and 2002 Mazda MPV. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Record freeze frame data. Check for service bulletins and on-line information. Repair as necessary. After repair, go to next step.
  2. Classify Intermittent Concern Or Continuous Concern -  Turn ignition on, engine off. If DTC P0443 is present, go to next step. If DTC is not present, problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  3. Classify Open Circuit Or Short To Ground Malfunction -  Disconnect vacuum hose at purge solenoid valve from intake manifold. Connect vacuum pump to purge solenoid valve. Pump vacuum pump several times. Wait a few seconds. If vacuum does not hold, go to next step. If vacuum holds, go to step  5.
  4. Inspect Passage Control Of Purge Solenoid Valve -  Turn ignition off. Disconnect purge solenoid valve harness connector. Pump vacuum pump several times at purge solenoid valve. Wait a few seconds. If vacuum does not hold, replace purge solenoid valve. After repair, go to step  10. If vacuum holds, repair short to ground on Green/Black wire between purge solenoid valve harness connector terminal "B" and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 18. See Figure. See appropriate wiring diagram under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in WIRING DIAGRAMS. After repair, go to step  10.
  5. Inspect Purge Solenoid Valve Connector For Poor Connection -  Turn ignition off. Disconnect purge solenoid valve harness connector. Check for damaged, loose or corroded terminals. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is present, repair terminal or connector as necessary. After repair, go to step  10.
  6. Inspect Purge Solenoid Valve -  Measure resistance between purge solenoid valve terminals. If resistance is 22-26 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 22-26 ohms, replace purge solenoid valve. After repair, go to step  10.
NOTE: Wire color changes between purge solenoid valve and main relay at inline harness connector "X-03".
  7. Inspect Purge Solenoid Valve Power Supply Circuit For Open Circuit -  Turn ignition on, engine off. Measure voltage between ground and purge solenoid valve harness connector terminal "A" (White/Red wire). If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in wire between purge solenoid valve harness connector terminal "A" (White/Red wire) and main relay terminal "D" (Yellow wire). After repair, go to step  10.
  8. Inspect PCM Connector For Poor Connection -  Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Check for damaged, loose or corroded terminals. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is present, repair terminal or connector as necessary. After repair, go to step  10.
  9. Inspect Purge Solenoid Valve Control Circuit -  Connect 104-pin Breakout Box (49-UN01-130) to PCM harness connector only. See Figure. Turn ignition on, engine off. Measure voltage between ground and purge solenoid valve harness connector terminal "B" (Green/Black wire). If battery voltage is present, repair Green/Black wire for short to power between purge solenoid valve harness connector terminal "B" and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 18. After repair, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check for continuity on Green/Black wire between purge solenoid valve harness connector terminal "B" and breakout box terminal No. 18. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair open in Green/Black wire between purge solenoid valve harness connector terminal "B" and PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 18. See appropriate wiring diagram under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in WIRING DIAGRAMS. After repair, go to next step.
  10. Verify Trouble Shooting Of DTC P0443 Completed -  Reconnect all components. Turn ignition off, then start engine. Using scan tool, recheck DTC. If DTC P0433 is present, replace PCM. After repair, go to next step. If DTC P0443 is not present, go to next step.
  11. Verify After Repair Procedure -  Using scan tool, perform After Repair Procedure. See AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE . If no other DTCs are present, testing is complete. If any other DTC is present, go to applicable test and repair.
