Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Mazda MPV and 2002 Mazda MPV. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Record freeze frame data. Check for service bulletins and on-line information. Repair as necessary. After repair, go to next step.
  2. Verify Related Pending & Stored DTCs -  Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, verify stored DTCs. If any other DTCs are present, repair those DTC(s) first. If no other DTCs are present, go to next step.
  3. Identify Trigger DTC For FREEZE FRAME DATA -  Verify DTCs P0131, P0132, P0151 and/or P0152 are present in FREEZE FRAME DATA. If DTCS are present, go to next step. If DTCs are not present in FREEZE FRAME DATA, go to INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  4. Verify Current Input Signal Status - Is Concern Intermittent Or Constant -  Start engine. Warm up engine to normal operating temperature. Using scan tool, access O2S11 (P0131 and P0132) or O2S21 (P0151 and P0152) PIDs. Monitor PIDs while racing engine (in PARK). PID values should be more than 0.45 volt when accelerator is suddenly depressed (rich condition) and less than 0.45 volt just after accelerator pedal is released (lean condition). If PID values are as specified, go to next step. If PID values are not as specified, replace front HO2S. After repair, go to step  19.
  5. Inspect Long Term Fuel Trim -  Using scan tool, access LONGFT1 (P0131 and P0132) or LONGFT2 (P0151 and P0152) PIDs and compare to FREEZE FRAME PID data recorded in step 1). If PID values are less than FREEZE FRAME DATA (engine is driven under rich condition). Go to next step. If PID values are more than FREEZE FRAME DATA (engine is driven under lean condition). Go to step  8.
  6. Inspect Fuel Line Pressure (Excessive Fuel Line Pressure) -  Turn ignition off. Check fuel line pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE (EXCEPT B2300, B3000, B4000 & TRIBUTE under FUEL SYSTEM in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article. If fuel pressure is 61-66 psi, go to next step. If fuel pressure is not as specified, check fuel pump maximum pressure and fuel return line for clogging. See FUEL PRESSURE (EXCEPT B2300, B3000, B4000 & TRIBUTE under FUEL SYSTEM in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article. Repair or replace as necessary. If no problem is found, replace fuel pressure regulator. After repair, go to step  19.
  7. Inspect Purge Solenoid Valve For Stuck Open -  Turn ignition off. Disconnect both vacuum hoses from purge solenoid valve. Attempt to blow air through purge solenoid valve. If air blows through valve, replace purge solenoid valve. If air does not blow through valve, go to step  12.
  8. Inspect PCV Valve Operation -  Inspect PCV valve operation. See POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - MAZDA6, MIATA, MPV, PROTEGE & PROTEGE5 article. If PCV valve is okay, go to next step. If PCV valve is faulty, replace PCV valve. After repair, go to step  19.
  9. Inspect Fuel Line Pressure (Low Fuel Line Pressure) -  Turn ignition off. Check fuel line pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE (EXCEPT B2300, B3000, B4000 & TRIBUTE under FUEL SYSTEM in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article. If fuel pressure is 61-66 psi, go to step  12. If fuel pressure is not as specified, go to next step.
  10. Inspect Fuel Pump Maximum Pressure -  Stop engine. Turn ignition on, engine off. Perform fuel pump maximum pressure test. See FUEL PRESSURE (EXCEPT B2300, B3000, B4000 & TRIBUTE under FUEL SYSTEM in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article. If fuel pump maximum pressure is 86-116 psi (590-800 kPa), go to next step. If fuel pressure is not as specified, check open poor connection in fuel pump circuit. If fuel pump circuit is okay, replace fuel pump. Repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  19.
  11. Inspect Fuel Line From Fuel Pump To Fuel Delivery Pump -  Check fuel lines for leaks. If any leaks are present, replace leaking fuel line. After repair, go to step  19. If no leaks are found, check high pressure fuel filter for clogging, or restriction. If high pressure fuel filter is clogged or restricted, replace high pressure fuel filter. Check low pressure fuel filter for foreign materials or stain. If foreign materials or stain are found inside low pressure fuel filter. Clean fuel tank and filter. If fuel filters are okay, replace fuel pressure regulator. After repair, go to step  19.
  12. Check Ignition Coil Operation With Spark Tester -  Start engine and allow to idle. Check for Blueish spark at each ignition coil using spark tester. If Blueish spark is not present at all cylinders, go to next step. If all cylinders show a Blueish spark, go to step  16.
  13. Check Ignition Coils Of No Spark Cylinder -  Turn ignition off. Check ignition coil for incorrect installation, damage or corrosion at ignition terminals, open lead and damaged cover. If no problem is found, go to next step. If any problem is found, replace faulty ignition coil. After repair, go to step  19.
  14. Inspect Power Supply Terminal At Ignition Coil Connector -  Disconnect ignition coil harness connector. Turn ignition on, engine off. Measure voltage between ground and ignition coil harness connector terminal "A" (White/Violet wire). If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in White/Violet wire between ignition coil harness connector terminal "A" and ignition switch terminal "IG 1". See appropriate wiring diagram under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in WIRING DIAGRAMS. After repair, go to step  19.
  15. Inspect Ignition Coil Resistance -  Check ignition coil resistance. See IGNITION CHECKS in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article. If coil resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not okay, replace ignition coil. After repair, go to step  19.
  16. Inspect Engine Compression -  Check engine compression. See MECHANICAL INSPECTION under PRELIMINARY INSPECTIONS in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article. If engine compression is okay, go to next step. If engine compression is not okay, perform engine overhaul repairs. See appropriate MECHANICAL article in ENGINES. After repair, go to next step.
  17. Inspect Fuel Injector Operation -  Turn ignition off. Check operation of fuel injector. See FUEL CONTROL under FUEL SYSTEM in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - MAZDA6, MIATA, MPV, PROTEGE & PROTEGE5 article. If fuel injector is okay, go to next step. If injector is faulty, replace fuel injector. After repair, go to step  19.
    WARNING: Removing radiator cap when radiator is hot is dangerous. Scalding coolant and steam may shoot out and cause serious injury. When removing radiator cap, wrap a thick cloth around and turn it slowly.
    NOTE: Large bubbles are normal since they are remaining air coming out from engine coolant passage.
  18. Inspect Sealing Of Engine Coolant Passage -  Check cooling system for combustion gasses. Remove radiator cap. Bleed air from cooling system. Start engine and let idle. Check for small bubbles which make coolant white at filler neck. If combustion gasses are not present, go to next step. If combustion gasses are present, repair leak as necessary and go to next step.
  19. Verify Trouble Shooting Of DTC P0131, P0132, P0151 Or P0152 Completed -  Reconnect all components. Turn ignition on, engine off. Clear DTC. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Using scan tool, access ECT and RPM PIDs. Ensure ECT PID is more than 158°F (70°C). Increase engine speed to more than 1500 RPM for at least one minute. If DTCs P0131, P0132, P0151 or P0152 are present, replace PCM. After repair, go to next step. If no other DTCs are present, go to next step.
  20. Verify After Repair Procedure -  Using scan tool, perform After Repair Procedure. See AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE . If no other DTCs are present, testing is complete. If any other DTC is present, go to applicable test and repair.
