Mazda6, MPV & Tribute 3.0L

The distributorless ignition system uses the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor to control ignition timing. Six individual ignition coils are used, one located on each spark plug.

The CMP sensor, located at front of engine, monitors TDC of cylinder No. 1 and crankshaft angle at 180-degree intervals. Signals created by the CMP sensor are sent to the PCM.

The PCM delivers ignition signals to trigger the appropriate ignition coil. The PCM controls spark timing and coil firing, based on information from the CKP sensor. Power for the ignition coils are supplied from the ignition switch.
