Diagnostic procedure

DTC P0340 [BP, BP WITH TC] DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 VERIFY FREEZE FRAME DATA HAS BEEN RECORDED 
  • Has FREEZE FRAME DATA been recorded?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Record FREEZE FRAME DATA on repair order, then go to the next step.
2 VERIFY RELATED REPAIR INFORMATION AVAILABILITY 
  • Check for related Service Bulletins and/or online repair information availability.
  • Is any related repair information available?
Yes Perform repair or diagnostic according to the available repair information
  • If the vehicle is not repaired, go to the next step.
No Go to the next step.
3 VERIFY CURRENT SIGNAL STATUS: IS CONCERN INTERMITTENT OR CONSTANT? 
  • Connect the WDS or equivalent to the DLC-2.
  • Clear the DTC from the PCM memory using the WDS or equivalent.
  • Run the vehicle under the FREEZE FRAME DATA stored condition.
  • Is the same DTC present?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Intermittent concern exists.
Perform the "INTERMITTENT CONCERNS TROUBLESHOOTING". (See INTERMITTENT CONCERN TROUBLESHOOTING .)
4 INSPECT POOR CONNECTION OF CMP SENSOR CONNECTOR 
  • Turn the ignition switch off.
  • Disconnect CMP sensor connector.
  • Check for poor connection (damaged, pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc.).
  • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Repair or replace the terminal, then go to Step 14.
No Go to the next step.
5 INSPECT POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT AT CMP SENSOR 
  • Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (Engine off).
  • Measure voltage between CMP sensor terminal A (harness-side) and body ground.
  • Is voltage B+  ?
Yes Go to next step
No Repair or replace for an open circuit, then go to Step 14.
6 INSPECT CMP SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT 
  • Check continuity between CMP sensor terminal C (harness-side) and body ground.
  • Is there continuity?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace for an open circuit, then go to Step 14.
7 INSPECT CMP SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO POWER 
  • Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (engine OFF).
  • Measure voltage between CMP sensor terminal B (harness-side) and body ground.
  • Is voltage B+  ?
Yes Repair or replace harness for short to power, then go to Step 14.
No Go to next step
8 INSPECT PCM CONNECTOR FOR POOR CONNECTION 
  • Turn the ignition switch off.
  • Disconnect the PCM connector.
  • Inspect for poor connection (such as damaged/pulled-out pins, corrosion).
  • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Repair or replace the terminal, then go to Step 14.
No Go to the next step.
9 INSPECT CMP SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND 
  • Turn the ignition switch off.
  • Check continuity between CMP sensor terminal B (harness-side) and body ground.
  • Is there continuity?
Yes Repair or replace harness for short to ground, then go to Step 14.
No Go to the next step.
10 INSPECT CMP SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT 
  • Turn the ignition switch off.
  • Disconnect PCM connector.
  • Check continuity between CMP sensor terminal B (harness-side) and PCM terminal 3V (harness-side).
  • Is there continuity?
Yes Go to next step
No Repair or replace for an open circuit, then go to Step 14.
11 INSPECT CMP SENSOR 
  • Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
  • Check pulsation signal comes out from PCM terminal 3V (harness-side) using voltmeter while cranking engine.
  • Is there any signal?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Check camshaft pulley for damage. Replace pulley and go to Step 14.
12 INSPECT CKP SENSOR 
  • Check CKP sensor for following.
    • CKP sensor is dirty.
    • Crankshaft pulley is damaged.
    • DTC P0335 is displayed etc.
  • Has above condition been detected?
Yes Repair or replace for malfunctioning parts, then go to the next step.
No Go to the next step.
13 IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CKP AND CMP ROTATION RATES NORMAL? 
  • Are the following parts normal?
    • Timing belt (deflection, tooth wear)
    • Camshaft pulley (foreign material, damaged)
    • Crankshaft pulley (foreign material, damaged)
Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace for malfunctioning parts, then go to the next step.
14 VERIFY TROUBLESHOOTING OF DTC P0340 COMPLETED 
  • Make sure to connect all disconnected connectors.
  • Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (Engine off).
  • Clear the DTC from the PCM memory using the WDS or equivalent.
  • Start engine.
  • Is same DTC present?
Yes Replace PCM, then go to the next step.
No Go to the next step.
15 VERIFY AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE  Yes Go to the applicable DTC inspection. (See DTC TABLE .)
No Troubleshooting completed.
