Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda B4000, 2002 Mazda B3000, and 2002 Mazda B2300. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If QUICK TEST was not performed, go to QUICK TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If QUICK TEST was performed, the fault that set Continuous Memory DTC P0443 (without KOEO or KOER DTC P0443) may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENT  under SYSTEM TESTS. After perform Intermittents test, replace PCM after determining fault is not intermittent. If KOEO or KOER DTC P0443 is also set, go to next step.
  2. Check For VPWR To EVAP Canister Purge Valve

Turn ignition off. Disconnect EVAP canister purge valve. With KOEO, measure voltage between EVAP canister purge valve harness connector VPWR circuit (Red wire) and battery ground. See Fig 1 . Record voltage. Turn ignition off. If voltage is more than 10.5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10.5 volts or less, repair open in VPWR circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to step  7 .

NOTE: EVAP canister purge valve resistance must be measured with engine cooled down.
  3. Check EVAP Canister Purge Solenoid Resistance

Measure resistance of EVAP canister purge valve. If resistance is 30-38 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 30-38 ohms, replace faulty EVAP canister purge valve. Go to step  7 .
  4. Check Resistance of EVAP CPV Circuit

Disconnect PCM connector. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Measure resistance of EVAP CPV circuit between breakout box terminal No. 56 and EVAP canister purge valve connector (Light Green/Blue wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to step  7 .
  5. Check EVAP Canister Purge Valve Circuit For Short To PWR GND

Disconnect scan tool. Measure resistance between breakout box terminals No. 56 (EVAP circuit) and 103 (PWR GND circuit). If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or less, repair short circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to step  7 .
  6. Check EVAP CPV Circuit For Short To VPWR

With KOEO, measure voltage between breakout box terminals No. 56 (EVAP circuit) and 103 (PWR GND circuit). Record voltage. Turn ignition off. If voltage is more than 10.5 volts, repair short circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to next step. If voltage is 10.5 volts or less, replace faulty PCM. VPWR is shorted inside PCM. Go to next step.
  7. Verify Trouble Shooting Of DTCs Completed

Perform QUICK TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If any DTC is present, go to applicable procedure for other DTCs. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If no DTCs are set, trouble shooting is complete.
