Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda B4000, 2002 Mazda B3000, and 2002 Mazda B2300. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If QUICK TEST was not performed, go to QUICK TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If QUICK TEST was performed, go to next step.
  2. DTC P0320: Erratic Ignition

    Check for the following:
    • Loose wires and connectors.
    • Arcing secondary ignition components (ignition coil, plug wires and spark plugs).
    • 2-way radio installation (if equipped). Verify 2-way radio installation regarding antenna and power lead routing. Verify equipment manufacturer's installation instructions are followed.
    If any of the above are present, repair as necessary. Go to step  25 . If any of the above conditions are not present:
    • For no starts, go to step  3 .
    • For intermittent faults, see INTERMITTENT  under SYSTEM TESTS.
    • For all other conditions, go to next step.
  3. Check CKP(+)/CKP(-) Continuity

    Disconnect CKP sensor connector and PCM connector. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Measure resistance of CKP(+) circuit between breakout box terminal No. 21 and CKP sensor harness connector (Dark Blue wire). See Fig 1 . Record reading. Measure resistance of CKP(-) circuit between breakout box terminal No. 22 and CKP sensor harness connector (Gray wire). Record reading. If each resistance reading is more than 5 ohms, repair open circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to step  25 . If each resistance reading is 5 ohms or less, go to next step.

  4. Check For CKP(+) Bias Voltage Fault

    Remove breakout box. Reconnect PCM connector. With KOEO, measure voltage between CKP(+) at CKP sensor harness connector (Dark Blue wire) and battery negative terminal. Turn ignition off. If voltage is one to 2 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not one to 2 volts, repair bias fault. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to step  17 .
  5. Check For CKP(-) Bias Voltage Fault

    With KOEO, measure voltage between CKP(-) terminal at CKP sensor harness connector (Gray wire) and battery negative terminal. Turn ignition off. If voltage is one to 2 volts, go to step  9 . If voltage is not one to 2 volts, repair bias fault. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to next step.
  6. Determine If Bias High Or Bias Low Fault

    If bias voltage reading for CKP(-) is less than one volt, bias low condition is present. Go to next step. If bias voltage reading for CKP(-) is not less than one volt, bias high condition is present. Go to step  8 .
  7. Check For CKP(-) Short To Ground In Harness

    Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Measure resistance of CKP(-) circuit between breakout box terminal No. 22 and battery negative terminal. If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, replace faulty PCM. Go to step  25 . If resistance is 10,000 ohms or less, repair short circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to step  25 .
  8. Check For CKP(-) Short To Power In Harness

    Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Measure voltage of CKP(-) circuit between breakout box terminal No. 22 and battery negative terminal. If voltage is less than 0.5 volt, replace faulty PCM. Go to step  25 . If voltage is 0.5 volts or more, repair short circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to step  25 .
  9. Check CKP Sensor Amplitude At PCM

    Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. With KOEO, measure voltage of CKP(-) circuit between breakout box terminals No. 21 CKP(+) and 22 CKP(-) while cranking engine. If (settled) AC voltage is more than 0.4 volt, go to next step. If (settled) AC voltage is 0.4 volt or less, repair amplitude fault. Go to step  11 .
  10. Check CKP(+) Circuit For Short To Ground At Sensor

    Measure resistance of CKP(+) circuit between breakout box terminal No. 21 and battery negative terminal. If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, go to step  20 . If resistance is 10,000 ohms or less, go to step  15 .
  11. Check CKP Circuit Resistance For Amplitude Fault

    Measure resistance between breakout box terminals No. 21 CKP(+) and 22 CKP(-). If resistance is 300-800 ohms, go to step  14 . If resistance is not 300-800 ohms, go to next step.
  12. Determine If Resistance High Or Resistance Low Fault

    If resistance reading in previous step is less than 300 ohms, a low resistance fault is present. Go to next step. If resistance reading in previous step is not less than 300 ohms, replace faulty CKP sensor. Go to next step.
  13. Check CKP(+) For Short To CKP(-)

    Disconnect CKP sensor connector. Measure resistance between CKP(+) (Dark Blue wire) and CKP(-) (Gray wire) at CKP sensor harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to step  25 . If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace faulty CKP sensor. Go to step  25 .
  14. Check CKP Sensor & Pulse Wheel

    Visually inspect pulse wheel and CKP sensor for damage. If components are okay, replace faulty CKP sensor. Go to step  25 . If either component is not okay, repair or replace damaged components. Go to step  25 .
  15. Check For Open Or Short In PCM

    Turn ignition off. Disconnect CKP sensor connector. Remove breakout box. Reconnect PCM connector. Measure resistance between CKP(+) (Dark Blue wire) and CKP(-) (Gray wire) at CKP sensor harness connector. If resistance is 16,000-24,000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 16,000-24,000 ohms, replace faulty PCM. Go to step  25 .
  16. Check CKP(+) For Short To CKP(-)

    Disconnect PCM connector. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Measure resistance between CKP(+) (Dark Blue wire) and CKP(-) (Gray wire) at CKP sensor harness connector. If resistance is more than 1000 ohms, replace faulty CKP sensor. Go to step  25 . If resistance is 1000 ohms or less, repair short circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to step  25 .
  17. Determine If Bias Voltage High Or Bias Voltage Low Fault

    If voltage in step  4 is less than one volt, a low bias fault is present. Go to next step. If voltage in step  4 is one volt or more, a high bias fault is present. Go to step  19 .
  18. Check CKP(+) Circuit For Short To Ground In Harness

    Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Measure resistance between breakout box terminal No. 21 CKP(+) and battery negative terminal. If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, replace faulty PCM. Go to step  25 . If resistance is 10,000 ohms or less, repair short circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to step  25 .
  19. Check CKP(+) Circuit For Short To Power In Harness

    Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. With KOEO, measure voltage between breakout box terminal No. 21 CKP(+) and battery negative terminal. If voltage is less than 0.5 volt, replace faulty PCM. Go to step  25 . If voltage is 0.5 volt or more, repair short circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to step  25 .
  20. Visual Inspection Of Ignition System

    Visually inspect engine compartment to make sure all coils and spark plug wires are properly secured. Inspect all wiring harnesses and connectors for damaged, burned or overheated insulation and loose or broken connections. Verify battery is fully charged. Turn all electrical accessories off. If a problem is identified, repair as necessary. Go to step  25 . If a problem is not identified, go to next step.
  21. DTC P0301 Through DTC P0306: Misfire On Specific Cylinder

    If any of these DTC's are set, go to applicable DTC, repair as necessary. If any of these DTC's are not set, go to next step.
  22. Check For Spark At All Cylinders

    Disable inertia fuel shutoff switch. Check for spark at each cylinder while cranking engine. If a bluish/white spark is consistent between all cylinders, turn ignition off. Go to next step. If a bluish/white spark is not consistent between all cylinders, turn ignition off. Inspect spark plug wires. Measure resistance of spark plug wires and replace if more than 7000 ohms per foot is present. Replace spark plug wires as necessary. Go to step  25 .
  23. Check Spark Plugs

    Remove and inspect all spark plugs for damage, wear, carbon deposits and proper gap. If spark plugs are okay, go to next step. If spark plugs are not okay, repair spark plugs or adjust gap. Replace as necessary. Go to step  25 .
  24. Check Spark Plug Resistance

    Measure resistance of each spark plug. If resistance is 2000-20,000 ohms, fault is intermittent. See DTC P0136, P1137 OR P1138  . If resistance is not 2000-20,000 ohms, replace spark plugs as necessary. Go to next step.
  25. Verify Trouble Shooting Of DTCs Completed

    Make sure all electrical connectors are reconnected. Clear DTCs from PCM memory using scan tool. Perform QUICK TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If the same DTC is present, replace faulty PCM. Repeat QUICK TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If any other DTC is present, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If no DTCs are present, test is complete.
