Test A: Air Bag Warning Light Does Not Illuminate When Ignition Is Turned On

- Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Turn ignition switch to ON position. Verify that other instrument cluster warning and indicator lights come on. If other warning and indicator lights DO NOT come on, inspect and repair instrument cluster, and related circuits as necessary. Recheck indicator and warning lights for proper function and perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . If other warning and indicator lights do come on, go to next step.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Inspect AIR BAG warning light bulb for secure installation. If it is not secure, reinstall properly and go to next step. If it is secure, check for faulty bulb and replace as necessary and go to step 6. If AIR BAG warning light bulb is good, reinstall properly and go to next step.
- Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access and disconnect all SAS control module connectors. See SAS CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check continuity between instrument cluster harness connector terminal 3R and SAS control module connector terminal 2W (Brown wire). See Fig 1 & Fig 3
. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace air bag wiring harness between SAS control module and instrument cluster and go to step 6.CAUTION: Improper insertion of insulator in SAS control module harness connector (to disable short bar) can damage short bar. Improper inspection of SAS control module connection may result. Ensure insulator is carefully placed in SAS control module harness connector.
- Insert an insulator between SAS control module harness connector terminals 2T and 2W, to disable short bar. See Fig 1 & Fig 2 . Reconnect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector terminal 3R (Brown wire). If voltage is less than 9 volts, go to next step. If voltage is more than 9 volts, replace air bag wiring harness and go to step 6.
- Check continuity between instrument cluster component connector terminals 3J and 3R. If continuity exists, replace SAS control module and go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace instrument cluster and go to next step.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Reconnect all connectors and install previously removed components. Reconnect negative battery cable. Clear past malfunction DTCs. See CLEARING PAST MALFUNCTION DTCS under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . If AIR BAG warning light operates normally, trouble shooting is complete. If AIR BAG warning light does not operate normally, go to step 1 and repeat inspection.
