DTC 91: Air Bag Warning Light Circuit

WARNING: Connecting ground or jumper wire to improper DLC terminal may cause air bag or other electrical system malfunction or damage, and could cause air bags to deploy without warning. Electrical system damage or personal injury may result. Ensure ground or jumper wire are properly connected to DLC during testing.
  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . If DTC 91 was retrieved as a present malfunction DTC, replace SAS control module and retest system. See SAS CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If DTC 91 was retrieved as a past malfunction DTC, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait more than one minute to allow back-up power supply to deplete. Check 10-amp METER fuse No. 18, located in fuse block behind left kick panel. If fuse is okay, reinstall fuse and go to next step. If fuse is blown, replace fuse No. 18 and go to step  8.
  3. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check AIR BAG warning light bulb. If bulb is okay, reinstall bulb and go to next step. If bulb is not okay, replace bulb and go to step  8.
  4. Measure continuity between instrument cluster component connector terminals 3J and 3R. See Figure. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace instrument cluster, and go to step  8.
  5. Connect negative battery cable and turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector terminal 3J. See Figure. If voltage is more than 9 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 9 volts, replace wiring harness between fuse block and instrument cluster and go to step  8.
  6. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access and disconnect all SAS control module connectors. See SAS CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check wiring harness between SAS control module connector terminal 2W and instrument cluster connector terminal 3R (Brown wire) for short to ground, short to power supply or open circuit. See Figure & Figure . If wiring harness is not okay, replace wiring harness and go to step  8. If wiring harness is okay, go to next step.
  7. Check wiring harness between SAS control module connector terminal 2W and DLC connector terminal FAB (Brown wire) for short to ground, short to power supply or open circuit. See Figure & Figure . If wiring harness is not okay, replace wiring harness and go to next step. If wiring harness is okay, go to next step.
  8. Disconnect negative battery cable. Reconnect all connectors and install previously removed components. Reconnect negative battery cable. Clear past malfunction DTCs. See CLEARING PAST MALFUNCTION DTCS  under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . If AIR BAG warning light operates normally, trouble shooting is complete. If AIR BAG warning light does not operate normally, reconfirm malfunction symptoms.
