DTC 6: Driver-Side Air Bag Module

  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait more than one minute to allow back-up power supply to deplete. Remove driver-side air bag module. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Inspect clockspring short bar separator. If clockspring short bar separator is okay, and if DTC 6 was retrieved as a present malfunction DTC, go to next step. If clockspring short bar separator is okay, and if DTC 6 was retrieved as a past malfunction DTC, go to step  6. If clockspring short bar separator is not okay, replace clockspring and go to step  9. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  2. Connect leads of Fuel and Temperature Checker (49 0839 285 or 49 N088 0A0) or 2 ohm resistor to clockspring-to-air bag connector terminals 3A and 3B at steering wheel. See Fig 1. If using fuel and temperature checker, set resistance to 2 ohms. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition to ON position. If DTC 6 is indicated, go to next step. If DTC 6 is not indicated, replace driver-side air bag module and go to step  9.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait more than one minute for back-up power to deplete. Remove steering column covers. Disconnect lower clockspring connector. Inspect clockspring short bar separator. If clockspring short bar separator is okay, go to next step. If clockspring short bar separator is not okay, replace clockspring-to-SAS control module air bag wiring harness and go to step  9.
  4. Connect leads of fuel and temperature checker or 2 ohm resistor to lower clockspring 2-pin connector terminals 1C and 1D at base of steering wheel. See Fig 1. If using fuel and temperature checker, set resistance to 2 ohms. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition to ON position. If DTC 6 is indicated, go to next step. If DTC 6 is not indicated, replace clockspring and go to step  9. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  5. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access and disconnect all SAS control module connectors. See SAS CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check air bag harness between SAS control module connector terminal 2D and lower clockspring connector terminal 1D (Yellow/Red wire), and between SAS control module connector terminal 2G and lower clockspring connector terminal 1C (Yellow/Black wire) for short to ground, short to power supply or an open circuit. See Figure & Fig 1 . If air bag wiring harness is okay, replace SAS control module and go to step  9. If air bag wiring harness is not okay, replace air bag wiring harness and go to step  9.
  6. Remove steering column covers. Disconnect lower clockspring connector. Inspect clockspring short bar separator. If clockspring short bar separator is okay, go to next step. If clockspring short bar separator is not okay, replace clockspring-to-SAS control module air bag wiring harness and go to step  9.
  7. Remove clockspring. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check clockspring continuity between specified terminals. See CLOCKSPRING INSPECTION  under COMPONENT TESTING. Continuity should exist as specified. If continuity exists as specified, go to next step. If continuity does not exist as specified, replace clockspring and go to step  9.
  8. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access and disconnect all SAS control module connectors. See SAS CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check air bag wiring harness between SAS control module connector terminal 2D and clockspring connector terminal 1D (Yellow/Red wire), and between SAS control module connector terminal 2G and clockspring connector terminal 1C (Yellow/Black wire) for short to ground, short to power supply or an open circuit. See Figure & Fig 1 . If wiring harness is okay, replace driver-side air bag module and go to step  9. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If wiring harness is not okay, replace air bag wiring harness and go to step  9.
  9. Disconnect negative battery cable. Reconnect all connectors and install previously removed components. Reconnect negative battery cable. Clear past malfunction DTCs. See CLEARING PAST MALFUNCTION DTCS  under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . If AIR BAG warning light operates normally, trouble shooting is complete. If AIR BAG warning light does not operate normally, reconfirm malfunction symptoms.
