DTC 37: Right-Side Air Bag Module Malfunction

NOTE: On models equipped without side air bags, DTCs 22, 25, 26, 32, 35, or 37 may be indicated concurrently. Diagnose the problem using the smallest DTC only.
  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . On models equipped without side air bags, go to step  5. On models equipped with side air bags, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait more than one minute to allow back-up power supply to deplete. Disconnect right-side air bag module connector. See Figure. Inspect air bag module short bar separator. If air bag module short bar separator is okay, and if DTC 37 was retrieved as a present malfunction DTC, go to next step. If DTC 37 was retrieved as a past malfunction DTC, go to step  4. If air bag module short bar separator is not okay, replace air bag wiring harness and go to step  6.
  3. Connect leads of Fuel and Temperature Checker (49 0839 285 or 49 N088 0A0) or 2 ohm resistor to right-side air bag module connector terminals "A" and "B". See Figure. If using fuel and temperature checker, set resistance to 2 ohms. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition to ON position. If DTC 37 is indicated, go to next step. If DTC 37 is not indicated, replace side air bag module and go to step  6. See SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  4. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access and disconnect all SAS control module connectors. See SAS CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check wiring harness between SAS control module connector terminal 1I and right-side air bag module connector terminal "A" (Yellow/Green wire), and between SAS control module connector terminal 1K and right-side air bag module connector terminal "B" (Yellow wire) for short to ground, short to power supply or an open circuit. See Figure & Figure . If wiring harness is okay and DTC 37 was retrieved as a present malfunction DTC, replace SAS control module and go to step  6. If wiring harness is okay and DTC 37 was retrieved as a past malfunction DTC, replace right-side air bag module and go to step  6. If wiring harness is not okay, replace air bag wiring harness and go to step  6.
  5. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access SAS control module and disconnect all connectors. See SAS CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check air bag wiring harness between ground and SAS connector terminal 2AA (Gray wire) for short to power supply or open circuit. See Figure. If wiring harness is okay and DTC 22 was retrieved as a present malfunction DTC, replace SAS control module and go to next step. If wiring harness is okay and DTC 22 was retrieved as a past malfunction DTC, go to next step. If wiring harness is not okay, replace air bag wiring harness and go to next step.
  6. Disconnect negative battery cable. Reconnect all connectors and install previously removed components. Reconnect negative battery cable. Clear past malfunction DTCs. See CLEARING PAST MALFUNCTION DTCS  under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . If AIR BAG warning light operates normally, trouble shooting is complete. If AIR BAG warning light does not operate normally, reconfirm malfunction symptoms.
