DTC 12: Passenger-Side Seat Belt PRETENSIONER Circuit

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda MPV. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait more than one minute to allow back-up power supply to deplete. Remove right-side lower B-pillar trim panel. Disconnect passenger-side pretensioner electrical connector. Inspect passenger-side pretensioner electrical connector for cracking or chipping. If passenger-side pretensioner electrical connector is damaged, replace air bag system wiring harness. If passenger-side pretensioner electrical connector is okay and DTC 12 was retrieved as a present malfunction DTC, go to next step. If passenger-side pretensioner electrical connector is okay and DTC 12 was retrieved as a past malfunction DTC, go to step  3.
  2. Connect leads of Fuel and Temperature Checker (49 0839 285 or 49 N088 0A0) or 2 ohm resistor to harness side of passenger-side seat belt pretensioner connector terminals "A" and "B". See Figure. If using fuel and temperature checker, set resistance to 2 ohms. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Retrieve air bag system DTCs. If DTC 12 is retrieved, go to next step. If DTC 12 is not retrieved, replace passenger-side seat belt pretensioner. See SEAT BELT PRETENSIONER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access SAS control module and disconnect all harness connectors. Inspect air bag system wiring harness between SAS control module terminal 3I and passenger-side seat belt pretensioner connector terminal "A" (Pink wire), and between SAS control module terminal 3K and passenger-side seat belt pretensioner connector terminal "B" (Blue/Yellow wire) for open, short to ground and short to battery. See Figure & Figure . If wiring harness is not okay, replace air bag system wiring harness between SAS control module and passenger-side seat belt pretensioner. If wiring harness is okay and DTC 12 was retrieved as a present malfunction DTC, replace SAS control module. If wiring harness is okay and DTC 12 was retrieved as a past malfunction DTC, replace passenger-side seat belt pretensioner. See SEAT BELT PRETENSIONER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
