WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Mazda RX-8. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOISE OCCURS AT IDLE WHEN VEHICLE IS STOPPED IN ALL POSITIONS/RANGES DESCRIPTION AND POSSIBLE CAUSE

22 Noise occurs at idle when vehicle is stopped in all positions/ranges
DESCRIPTION
  • Transmission is noisy in all positions and ranges when vehicle is idling.
POSSIBLE CAUSE
  • High-pitched noise emitted from AT at idle may be caused by pressure control solenoid or oil pump.
  • There may also be engine noise (idle speed mis adjustment and/or V belt noise)
    NOTE:
    • If a noise is emitted during shifting only, the malfunction is in solenoid. If a noise is emitted during shifting at certain gears only or during deceleration only, it is gear noise.
    • Before following the troubleshooting steps, make sure that the Automatic Transmission On-Board Diagnostic and Automatic Transmission Basic Inspection are conducted. (See BASIC INSPECTION .)
