DTC 6: Driver-Side Air Bag Module

  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Remove driver-side air bag module. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Inspect upper clockspring connector for damage. If connector is okay, go to next step. If connector is damaged, replace clockspring. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  2. Connect leads of Fuel and Thermometer Checker (49 0839 285) to upper clockspring connector terminals 3B and 3C. See Fig 1. Set resistance of checker to 2 ohms. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition on and check for DTCs. If DTC 6 is displayed, go to next step. If DTC 6 is not displayed, replace driver-side air bag module and go to step  6.
  3. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Remove steering column covers. Disconnect lower clockspring connector. Check lower clockspring connector for damage. If connector is okay, go to next step. If connector is damaged, replace air bag wiring harness between clockspring and SAS control unit and go to step  6.
  4. Connect leads of fuel and thermometer checker to SAS control unit side of lower clockspring connector Yellow/Black and Yellow/Red wires. Set resistance of checker to 2 ohms. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition on and check for DTCs. If DTC 6 is displayed, go to next step. If DTC 6 is not displayed, replace clockspring. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  5. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Access and disconnect SAS control unit connector. See SAS CONTROL UNIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check wiring harness between SAS control unit connector, terminal "O" (Yellow/Black wire) and clockspring connector terminal "M" (Yellow/Red wire). See Figure. Check for short to ground, power, and open circuit. If wiring is okay, replace SAS control unit and go to next step. If wiring harness is faulty, replace wiring harness between clockspring and SAS control unit and go to next step.
  6. Reinstall all components and reconnect all connectors. Activate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
