DTC 5: Side Air Bag Wiring Harness

- Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . On vehicles equipped without side air bags, go to step 8. On vehicles equipped with side air bags, disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Remove steering column covers. Disconnect lower clockspring connectors. See Figure. Remove glove box. Disconnect passenger-side air bag module connector. See Figure. Access SAS control unit and disconnect connector. See SAS CONTROL UNIT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect left side air bag module connector, located under front seat. Access and disconnect left side air bag sensor connector and go to next step. See SIDE AIR BAG SENSOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Check wiring harness between SAS connector terminal "V" (Brown wire) and left side air bag sensor connector for short to ground, power or open circuit. If terminal "V" (Brown wire) is okay, go to next step. If terminal "V" (Brown wire) is not okay, replace air bag wiring harness between driver-side air bag sensor and SAS control unit and go to step 9.
- Disconnect right side air bag module connector, located under front seat. Access and disconnect right side air bag sensor connector. See SIDE AIR BAG SENSOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check for continuity between left side air bag sensor connector, terminal "Y" and right side air bag sensor connector, terminal "G". See Fig 1. If there is continuity, go to next step. If there is not continuity, replace air bag wiring harness between right and left air bag sensors and go to step 9.
- Reconnect right side air bag sensor connector. Connect negative battery cable and turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and right side air bag sensor connector, terminal "G". See Fig 1. If voltage is not approximately 5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is approximately 5 volts, go to step 6.
- Measure voltage between ground and right side air bag sensor connector, terminals "Z" and "AB". See Fig 1. If voltage is below 8 volts, repair or replace wire harness as necessary between battery and right side air bag sensor. Check battery and charging system for malfunctions and repair as necessary. Go to step 9. If voltage is above 8 volts, replace right side air bag sensor and go to step 9. See SIDE AIR BAG SENSOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Disconnect right side air bag sensor connector. Reconnect left side air bag sensor connector. Reconnect negative battery cable and turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and left side air bag sensor connector, terminals "V" and "Y". See Fig 1. If voltage is not approximately 5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is approximately 5 volts, replace SAS control unit and go to step 9. See SAS CONTROL UNIT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Measure voltage between ground and left side air bag sensor connector, terminals "Z" and "AB". See Fig 1. If voltage is below 8 volts, repair or replace wire harness as necessary between battery and left side air bag sensor. Check battery and charging system for malfunction and repair as necessary. Go to step 9. If voltage is above 8 volts, replace left side air bag sensor and go to step 9. See SIDE AIR BAG SENSOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Access and disconnect SAS control unit. See SAS CONTROL UNIT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure continuity between ground and SAS control unit connector, terminal "Y". If there is continuity, replace air bag wiring harness and go to next step. If there is not continuity, replace SAS control unit and go to next step.
- Reinstall all components and reconnect all connectors. Activate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
