DTC 3: Battery Power

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda 626. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Measure battery voltage. If battery voltage is more than 9 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 9 volts, check battery and charging system. Repair as necessary and go to step  4.
  2. Remove driver-side front door scuff plate and front side trim. Remove fuse block without disconnecting connectors. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and fuse block connector JB-08, terminal "A" (Black/White wire) and connector JB-07, terminal "K" (Yellow wire). See Fig 1. If voltage is more than 9 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 9 volts, repair wire harness between battery and fuse block and go to step  4. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  3. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Remove steering column covers. Disconnect lower clockspring connectors. See Figure. Remove glove box. Disconnect passenger-side air bag module connector. See Figure. Access SAS control unit and disconnect connector. See SAS CONTROL UNIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Reconnect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and SAS control unit connector terminal "AB" (Yellow wire) and "Z" (Black/White wire). See Figure. If voltage is more than 9 volts, replace SAS control unit and go to next step. If voltage is less than 9 volts, replace air bag wiring harness between fuse block and SAS control unit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  4. Reinstall all components and reconnect all connectors. Activate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
