Air Bag Warning Light Remains On After Ignition Is Turned On

  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Ensure battery voltage is more than 9 volts. If battery voltage is less than 9 volts, inspect and repair battery and/or charging system as necessary and go to step  6. If battery voltage is more than 9 volts, go to next step.
  2. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Remove steering column covers. Disconnect lower clockspring connectors. See Figure. Remove glove box. Disconnect passenger-side air bag module connector. See Figure. Access SAS control unit and check that SAS control unit connector is securely connected. See SAS CONTROL UNIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect SAS control unit connector and inspect short bar and terminals "Q" and "S" for damage. See Figure. If short bar and terminals "Q" and "S" are okay, go to next step. If terminals "Q" and "S" are not okay, replace air bag wiring harness and go to step  6.
  3. Check short bar hook of SAS control unit. If short bar hook is okay, go to next step. If short bar hook is damaged, replace SAS control unit and go to step  6. See SAS CONTROL UNIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
    CAUTION: Carefully insert insulation without bending or damaging short bar.
  4. Remove meter hood and instrument cluster. Disconnect instrument cluster 12-pin harness connector. Insert insulation material between terminals "Q" and "S" of SAS control unit connector so that short bar is disabled. See Figure. Check continuity between ground and terminal 1E of SAS control unit connector. If there is continuity, replace air bag wiring harness and go to step  6. If there is no continuity, go to next step.
  5. Check continuity between instrument cluster 12-pin terminal 1E and instrument cluster 14-pin connector terminals 2B (Black/Orange wire) and 2N (Black wire) on printed circuit plate. See Figure. If continuity exists, replace instrument cluster printed circuit plate and go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace SAS control unit and go to next step. See SAS CONTROL UNIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  6. Reinstall all components and reconnect all connectors. Activate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
