Possible Causes

An incorrect module design level code could be caused by an RCM installed on wrong vehicle, an incorrectly programmed RCM or vehicle ID terminals not connected as expected.
- Check for hard or intermittent DTC
Turn ignition switch to off position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). See USING SCAN TOOL under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Retrieve and record any continuous DTCs. See RETRIEVING FAULT CODES under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform on-demand self-test. See ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC C1414 was retrieved during on-demand self-test, fault is hard. Go to next step. If DTC C1414 was not retrieved, fault is intermittent. Go to step 4 .NOTE: For the following test, RCM connector terminals No. 10 and 14 should be open circuited. - Check vehicle identification No. 1 & 3
Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access RCM. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Inspect RCM harness connector terminals No. 10 and 14 to ensure they are empty (contains no wire) and that no connection would be made when mated to RCM. See Figure . If terminals are empty (contains no wire), go to next step. If terminals are not empty (has wire attached), repair as necessary. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Go to next step.NOTE: For the following test, RCM connector terminal No 13 should be connected to ignition voltage. - Check vehicle identification No. 2
Measure voltage between RCM harness connector terminals No. 13 (White/Yellow wire, circuit No. 1001) and No. 21 (Black/Orange wire, circuit No. 649). See Figure . If voltage is not 9-16 volts, repair open in appropriate White/Yellow wire. Go to step 5 . If voltage is 9-16 volts, go to next step. - Check RCM programmed vehicle identification
Using scan tool, select PID/DATA MONITOR AND RECORD. Select PID VID #1, VID #2, VID #3. If VID #2 is GROUND, VID #1 and VID #3 is NO CONNECT, go to next step. If VID #1, VID #2 and VID #3 is not as specified, replace RCM and go to step 6 . - Check for intermittent fault
Refer to continuous DTCs recorded in step 1 . If DTC retrieved in step 1 was an intermittent fault, check for cause of intermittent open on RCM harness connector terminal No. 10 (White/Yellow wire. circuit No. 1001). Attempt to recreate fault by flexing wire harness and cycling ignition switch frequently. Repair any intermittent problems found. Go to next step. If DTC retrieved in step 1 was not an intermittent fault, go to next step. - Check for additional DTCs
Refer to continuous DTCs recorded in step 1 . If any continuous DTCs were retrieved, go to diagnostic trouble code identification table for direction to appropriate test. DO NOT clear any DTCs until all DTCs have been resolved. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) IDENTIFICATION table. If no continuous DTCs were retrieved, reactivate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Prove out system. See PROVE OUT SYSTEM under DIAGNOSTICS. Clear all DTCs. See CLEARING FAULT CODES under DIAGNOSTICS.
