Test A: Air Bag Warning Light Does Not Illuminate After Ignition Is Turned On

  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Turn ignition switch to ON position and observe instrument cluster warning lights. If other warning lights illuminate, turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Go to next step. If other warning lights do not illuminate, repair instrument cluster power or ground circuits. Go to step  6.
  2. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove instrument cluster. Inspect AIR BAG warning light bulb. If bulb is okay, reinstall bulb and go to next step. If bulb is defective, replace bulb and go to step  6.
  3. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Check for continuity of White/Green wire between SAS control module connector terminal No. 2W and Blue 18-pin instrument cluster connector terminal No. 3K. See Fig 1 & Fig 2 . If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace wiring harness. Go to step  6.
  4. Insert insulating material between SAS control module connector terminals No. 2W (White/Green wire) and No. 2T (Black/Orange wire). Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and Blue 18-pin instrument cluster connector terminal No. 3K (White/Green wire). If voltage is more than 9 volts, replace wiring harness. Go to step  6. If voltage is less than 9 volts, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Using a fused jumper wire, connect Blue 18-pin instrument cluster connector terminal No. 3K (White/Green wire) to ground, then reconnect connector. Turn ignition on. If AIR BAG warning light illuminates, replace SAS control module. Go to next step. If AIR BAG warning light does not illuminate, replace instrument cluster. Go to next step.
  6. Reconnect all connectors. Install instrument cluster. Activate air bag system and perform SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . If AIR BAG warning light is operating properly, test is complete. If AIR BAG warning light does not operate properly, recheck malfunction symptoms, then repeat from step  1 if malfunction recurs.
