Description & Operation: Introduction

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda Millenia and 2001 Mazda Millenia. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The GF4A-EL is a 4-speed electronically controlled automatic transaxle. Six solenoids control shift changes and shift feel, and are located in valve body. Solenoids are controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

PCM receives information from various input devices. PCM uses this information to control the following solenoids:

A HOLD switch is mounted on shift lever. When HOLD switch is released to ON position, transaxle will shift into 4th gear when shift lever is in "D" position. HOLD indicator on combination meter should not be illuminated. When HOLD switch is depressed to OFF position, transaxle will not shift into 4th gear and HOLD indicator will be illuminated.
