Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda 626 and 2001 Mazda 626. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect transaxle harness connector and install transmission tester. Connect DVOM negative lead to tester VPWR jack and positive lead to 3-2T/CCS jack. Resistance should be 3.75-5.92 ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace solenoid body assembly. See appropriate OVERHAUL article. After repairs, go to step 5.
- Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and terminals No. 3, 6 and 9 at transaxle harness connector. See Figure. If battery voltage is present on all circuits, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present on any specified circuit, repair open circuit. After repairs, go to step 5.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect 104-pin PCM harness connector. PCM is located behind center console. Inspect connector for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. Install breakout box. Measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin No. 71 and 97 and transaxle harness connector terminal No. 6. Measure and record resistance between breakout box pin No. 102 and transaxle harness connector terminal No. 8. See Figure. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or greater, repair suspect open circuit. After repairs, go to step 5.
- Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between breakout box test pin No. 71 and 97, and pin No. 102. Measure resistance between breakout box test pin No. 77, 103 and breakout box test pin No. 102. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. Is resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short in wiring. After repairs, go to next step.
- Disconnect breakout box and transmission tester. Connect all components. Erase all DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Record continuous memory DTCs and freeze frame data. Perform KOEO and KOER self-tests. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P1788 or P1789 are still present, replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Repeat TRANSAXLE DRIVE CYCLE TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P1788 or P1789 are not present but symptoms still exist, see TROUBLE SHOOTING .
CAUTION:
On vehicles equipped with immobilizer system, reprogram ignition key identification numbers after PCM replacement. See PROGRAMMING .
