Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda 626 and 2001 Mazda 626. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Connect scan tool to DLC. Perform KOEO TEST until continuous memory DTC is displayed. Enter Output Test Mode EPC V, select EPC PID and cycle EPC solenoid. If EPC solenoid cycles, go to next step. If EPC solenoid does not cycle or vehicle did not enter Output Test Mode, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect transaxle harness connector. Connect transmission tester. Ensure tester power is off. Connect ohmmeter to EPC solenoid jacks. If resistance is 3.75-5.92 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 3.75-5.92 ohms, replace solenoid body assembly. See appropriate SERVICING article. After repairs, go to step  7.
  3. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and terminals No. 3, 6 and 9 at transaxle harness connector terminal. See Figure. If battery voltage is present on all circuits, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present on any specified circuit, repair open circuit. After repairs, go to step  7.
  4. Turn ignition off, and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect 104-pin PCM harness connector. PCM is located behind center console. Inspect connector for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Measure and record resistance between breakout box test pins No. 71 and 97, and transaxle harness connector terminal No. 9. See Figure. Measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin No. 81 and transaxle harness connector terminal No. 10. If each resistance measurement is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If any resistance measurement is more than 5 ohms, repair open circuit. After repairs, go to step  7.
  5. Measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin No. 81 and test pins No. 71 and 97. Measure and record resistance between test pin No. 81 and test pins No. 24, 51, 76, 77, 91 and 103. If any resistance measurement is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short circuit. After repairs, go to step  7. If each resistance is 10 k/ohms or more, go to next step.
  6. Check for continuity between transmission tester EPC solenoid jacks and ground. If continuity exists, replace solenoid body assembly. See appropriate SERVICING article. After repairs, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, see TROUBLE SHOOTING .
  7. CAUTION: On vehicles equipped with immobilizer system, reprogram ignition key identification numbers after PCM replacement. See PROGRAMMING .
  8. Disconnect breakout box and transmission tester. Connect all components. Erase all DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Record continuous memory DTCs and freeze frame data. Perform KOEO and KOER self-tests. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P1746 or P1747 is still present, replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If no DTCs are present but symptoms still exist, see TROUBLE SHOOTING .
