Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda 626 and 2001 Mazda 626. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect TR switch connector. Inspect connector for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. Reconnect TR switch connector. Verify shift linkage adjustment. Ensure TR switch is correctly adjusted. See appropriate SERVICING article. Adjust as needed and go to step  8. If sensor is correctly adjusted, go to next step.
  2. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect TR switch harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between harness connector terminals "B" and "D". See TR SWITCH WIRE COLOR IDENTIFICATION  table. If voltage is 4.75-5.25 volts, go to step  5. If voltage is not 4.75-5.25 volts, go to next step.

    Connector Terminal No. Wire Color
    "B" Black/Yellow
    "D" Green
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect 104-pin PCM harness connector. PCM is located behind center console. Inspect connector for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin No. 91 and TR switch harness connector terminal No. "B". Measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin No. 64 and TR switch harness connector terminal No. "D". See TR SWITCH WIRE COLOR IDENTIFICATION  table. If each resistance measurement is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If any resistance measurement is more than 5 ohms, repair open circuit. After repairs, go to step  8.
  4. Measure resistance between breakout box test pin No. 64 and test pins No. 71, 77, 91, 97 and 103. Measure resistance between breakout box test pin No. 64 and ground. If each measurement is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If any measurement is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short circuit. After repairs, go to step  8.
  5. Install TR switch overlay on transmission tester. Connect tester to TR switch. Check continuity and resistances in all positions. See TR SWITCH RESISTANCE SPECIFICATIONS  table under diagnostic procedure for DTC P0707 and P0708. If TR switch does not operate within specification, replace sensor. After repairs, go to step  8. If sensor operates within specification, go to next step.
  6. Monitor transmission tester indicator lights while moving gearshift lever through all positions. If indicator light display matches gearshift lever position, go to next step. If indicator light does not match gearshift lever position, replace TR switch. After repairs, go to step  8.
  7. Monitor transmission tester indicator light while moving gearshift lever to "R" position. Verify if back-up lights are illuminated. If indicator light display matches gearshift lever position and back-up lights operate correctly, go to next step. If indicator light display does not match gearshift lever position and/or back-up lights are not illuminated, replace TR switch. After repairs, go to next step.
  8. CAUTION: On vehicles equipped with immobilizer system, reprogram ignition key identification numbers after PCM replacement. See PROGRAMMING .
  9. Disconnect breakout box and transmission tester. Connect all components. Erase all DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Record continuous memory DTCs and freeze frame data. Perform KOEO and KOER self-tests. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P1705 is still present, replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If no DTCs are present but symptoms still exist, see TROUBLE SHOOTING .
