Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda 626 and 2001 Mazda 626. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Ensure transaxle harness connector is in acceptable condition and fully seated. Repair as necessary. Connect scan tool to DLC. Perform KOEO test until continuous memory DTCs have been displayed. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Enter output test mode. Select TCC PID on scan tool. Cycle TCC solenoid on and off. If solenoid cycles, go to next step. If solenoid does not cycle or if vehicle will not enter output state, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Disconnect transaxle harness connector. Using DVOM, connect positive lead to transaxle harness connector terminal No. 3. See Figure. Connect negative lead to terminal No. 4. Using scan tool, cycle solenoid output. If voltage changes at least .5 volt, go to step 5. If voltage does not change, go to next step.
- Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect 104-pin PCM harness connector. PCM is located behind center console. Inspect connector for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin No. 54 and transaxle harness connector terminal No. 4. See Figure. Measure and record resistance between test pins No. 71 and 97 and transaxle harness connector terminals No. 3, 6 and 9. If any resistance measurement is greater than 5 ohms, repair open circuit. After repairs, go to step 9. If each resistance measurement is 5 ohms or less, go to next step.
- Measure and record resistance between test pin No. 54 and test pins No. 71 and 97. Measure and record resistance between test pins No. 54, 77, 91, and 103, and ground. If any resistance measurement is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . After repairs, go to step 9. If each resistance measurement is 10 k/ohms or more, go to next step.
- Connect transmission tester. Perform TCC solenoid functional test. See tester instructions. If solenoid activates (Green LED on), go to next step. If solenoid does not activate LED, go to step 7.
- Connect 104-pin PCM harness connector. Perform tester drive test. See tester instructions. If engine RPM decreases when TCC is operated with tester, replace PCM. If engine RPM does not decrease when TCC solenoid is operated by tester, go to next step.
- Set tester Bench/Drive switch to BENCH position. Set solenoid selector switch to OHMS CHECK. Connect ohmmeter negative lead to TCC solenoid jack and positive lead to VPWR jack on tester. Measure resistance. Resistance should be 12.5-19 ohms. If resistance is within specification, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, replace solenoid body assembly. After repairs, go to step 9.
- Check for continuity between ground and TCC solenoid jacks on tester. If continuity exists, replace solenoid body assembly. After repairs, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, go to next step.
- Disconnect breakout box and transmission tester. Connect all components. Erase all DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Record continuous memory DTCs and freeze frame data. Perform KOEO and KOER self-tests. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTCs are still present, replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If no DTCs are present but symptoms still exist, see TROUBLE SHOOTING .
CAUTION:
On vehicles equipped with immobilizer system, reprogram ignition key identification numbers after PCM replacement. See PROGRAMMING .
