Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda 626 and 2001 Mazda 626. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Ensure transaxle harness connector is in acceptable condition and fully seated. Connect scan tool to DLC. Perform KOEO test until continuous memory DTCs have been displayed. Enter output test mode. Select SS1 and SS2 PIDs. Cycle SS1 and SS2 on and off by selecting stop/start mode. If vehicle enters output state and SS1 and SS2 PIDs cycle, go to next step. If vehicle will not enter output state, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  2. Disconnect transaxle harness connector. Using DVOM, connect positive lead to transaxle harness connector terminal No. 6. See Fig 1. Connect negative lead to suspect solenoid circuit at connector. Using scan tool, enter output test mode. Select appropriate shift solenoid PID. Cycle suspected solenoid on and off by selecting stop/start mode. If voltage changes at least .5 volt, go to step  5. If voltage does not change, go to next step.
  3. Ensure ignition is off. Leave transaxle harness connector disconnected. Disconnect 104-pin PCM harness connector. PCM is located behind center console. Inspect connector for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin No. 1 and transaxle harness connector terminal No. 5. See Fig 1. Measure and record resistance between test pin No. 27 and transaxle harness connector terminal No. 7. Measure and record resistance between test pins No. 71 and 97 and transaxle harness connector terminals No. 3, 6 and 9. If any resistance measurement is greater than 5 ohms, repair open circuit. After repairs, go to step  9. If each resistance measurement is 5 ohms or less, go to next step.
  4. Measure and record resistance between breakout box test pins No. 1 or 27 and test pins No. 71 and 97. Measure and record resistance between chassis ground and test pins No. 1 or 27 and between chassis ground and test pins No. 77, 91 and 103. If any resistance measurement is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short circuit. After repairs, go to  9. If each resistance measurement is 10 k/ohms or more, go to next step.
  5. Connect transmission tester. Perform solenoid voltage test. See tester instructions. If solenoid activates (Green LED on), go to next step. If solenoid does not activate LED, go to step  7.
  6. Remove breakout box. Connect 104-pin PCM harness connector. Perform TRANSAXLE DRIVE CYCLE TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. See tester instructions. If vehicle upshifts when operated with tester, replace PCM. After repairs, go to  9. If vehicle does not upshift when operated by tester, go to next step.
  7. Set transmission tester Bench/Drive switch to BENCH position. Set solenoid selector switch to OHMS CHECK. Connect ohmmeter negative lead to suspected shift solenoid jack and positive lead to VPWR jack on tester. Measure and record resistance. Resistance should be 12-22 ohms. If resistance is within specification, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, replace solenoid body assembly. After repairs, go to step  9.
  8. Check for continuity between BAT(-) terminal and SS1 and SS2 jacks. If continuity exists, replace solenoid body assembly. After repairs, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, see TROUBLE SHOOTING .
  9. CAUTION: On vehicles equipped with immobilizer system, reprogram ignition key identification numbers after PCM replacement. See PROGRAMMING .
  10. Connect all components. Disconnect transmission tester and breakout box. Erase all DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Record continuous memory DTCs and freeze frame data. Perform KOEO and KOER self-tests. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTCs are still present, replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If no DTCs are present but symptoms still exist, go to TROUBLE SHOOTING .
