Diagnostic Procedure (2002 Models)

- Inspect condition of TSS sensor harness and component connector. Repair as needed. Go to next step.
- Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect 104-pin PCM harness connector. PCM is located behind center console. Inspect connector for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Disconnect TSS sensor harness connector. Measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin No. 84 and TSS sensor harness connector positive terminal. See Figure. Measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin No. 91 and TSS sensor harness connector negative terminal. If each resistance measurement is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance measurement of either circuit is more than 5 ohms, repair open circuit. After repairs, go to step 9.
- Measure and record resistance between breakout box test pins No. 91 and 84, and test pins No. 71 and 97. Measure and record resistance between breakout box test pins No. 24, 51, 76, 77 and 103, and test pins No. 91 and 84, and test pins No. 71 and 97. If any resistance measurement is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short circuit. After repairs, go to step 9. If each resistance measurement is 10 k/ohms or more, go to next step.
- Connect 104-pin PCM harness connector. Ensure TSS sensor harness connector is disconnected. Connect transmission tester to TSS sensor component connector. Connect voltmeter leads to appropriate tester TSS sensor jacks. Set voltmeter to 20 volt AC scale. Perform drive cycle test. See TRANSAXLE DRIVE CYCLE TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If voltage increases with vehicle speed, replace PCM. After repairs, go to step 9. If voltage does not increase with speed, go to next step.
- Connect ohmmeter leads to appropriate transmission tester TSS sensor jacks. If resistance is 140-290 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 140-290 ohms, replace TSS sensor. After repairs, go to step 9.
- Check for continuity between transmission tester TSS sensor jacks and ground. If continuity does not exist, go to next step. If continuity exists, replace TSS sensor. After repairs, go to step 9.
- Remove TSS sensor from transaxle. See appropriate OVERHAUL article. Determine if TSS sensor is magnetically attracted to ferrous metal. If TSS sensor is magnetic, go to next step. If TSS sensor is not magnetic, replace TSS sensor. After repairs, go to step 9.
- With TSS sensor removed, inspect condition of exciter wheel. Rotate engine with remote starter switch, and ensure all 4 teeth of exciter wheel are not damaged. Replace exciter wheel if any teeth are damaged. See appropriate OVERHAUL article. If exciter wheel is not damaged, replace TSS sensor. After repairs, go to next step.
- Disconnect breakout box and transmission tester. Connect all components. Erase all DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Record continuous memory DTCs and freeze frame data. Perform KOEO and KOER self-tests. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P0715 is still present, replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If DTC P0715 is not present but symptoms still exist, see TROUBLE SHOOTING .
CAUTION:
On vehicles equipped with immobilizer system, reprogram ignition key identification numbers after PCM replacement. See PROGRAMMING .
