Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda 626 and 2001 Mazda 626. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition on. Connect scan tool to DLC. Access TFT PID voltage with scan tool. If voltage is less than .5 volt, inspect all applicable connections. Repair as needed, then go to step  6. If voltage is greater than .5 volt, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect transaxle harness connector. Inspect condition of connector, and repair as needed. Connect transmission tester. Set Bench/Drive switch to BENCH mode. Rotate selector switch to OHMS position. Measure resistance between TFT sensor jacks on tester. Confirm measurements correspond to values shown in appropriate TFT SENSOR TEMPERATURE/RESISTANCE SPECIFICATIONS table. If measurements are not within specification, replace solenoid body assembly. After repairs, go to step  6. If measurements are within specification, go to next step.

    TFT SENSOR TEMPERATURE/RESISTANCE SPECIFICATIONS (2002 MODELS)

  3. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminals No. 3, 6 and 9 on transaxle harness connector. See Figure. If battery voltage is present on all terminals, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present on any specified terminal, repair open circuit, then go to step  6.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM harness connector. PCM is located behind center console. Inspect connector for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Check for continuity between ground and breakout box pin No. 37. If continuity is present, repair circuit for short to ground. After repairs, go to step  6. If continuity is not present, go to next step.
  5. Measure resistance between terminal No. 1 at transaxle harness connector and breakout box pin No. 37. See Figure. If resistance is less than 5.0 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5.0 ohms, repair open in TFT SIG harness circuit. After repairs, go to next step.
  6. CAUTION: On vehicles equipped with immobilizer system, reprogram ignition key identification numbers after PCM replacement. See PROGRAMMING .
  7. Connect all components. Disconnect transmission tester and breakout box. Erase all DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Record continuous memory DTCs and freeze frame data. Perform KOEO and KOER self-tests. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTCs are still present, replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If DTC P0712 or P1713 is not present but symptoms still exist, see TROUBLE SHOOTING .
