Low-Reverse Brake: Reassembly

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 9 other vehicles, including the 2005 Mazda 6, 2005 Mazda 3, 2004 Mazda 6, 2004 Mazda 3, and 2003 Mazda Protege5. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Installing low-reverse brake piston may damage seal. Carefully install low-reverse brake piston by pushing evenly around circumference.
  1. Apply ATF to circumference of low-reverse brake piston seal. Install piston into transaxle case. Install piston return spring and one-way clutch to transaxle case.
  2. Compress one-way clutch inner race enough to install snap ring. Install snap ring. Ensure snap ring opening is in correct position. See Fig 1. Install dish plate. Install drive and driven plates in alternate order, beginning with driven plate. Install retaining plate and snap ring.
  3. Install a dial gauge to low-reverse brake. Set measuring point of dial gauge to low-reverse brake piston. Apply maximum air pressure of 14 psi (1.0 kg/cm2 ) compressed air to low-reverse brake fluid passage and allow low-reverse brake piston to stroke 3 times.
  4. Apply maximum air pressure of 14 psi (1.0 kg/cm2 ) compressed air, for no more than 3 seconds, and operate low-reverse brake piston. Read value when indicator of dial gauge stops. Release compressed air. Read dial gauge when low-reverse brake piston is not operating. Subtract second value from first value to obtain low-reverse brake clearance.
  5. Repeat step  4 at 4 locations (90 degrees apart). Ensure average value is .087-.098" (2.20-2.50 mm). If clearance is not within specification, remove snap ring and measure thickness. Add snap ring thickness to average low-reverse brake clearance. Select appropriate snap ring to obtain proper clearance. See LOW-REVERSE BRAKE SNAP RING SIZES  table.
  6. Install snap ring and perform steps  35 . Ensure clearance is within specification.
  7. Apply compressed air to low-reverse brake fluid passage. Ensure air flows through passage.
