Forward Clutch: Inspection

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 9 other vehicles, including the 2005 Mazda 6, 2005 Mazda 3, 2004 Mazda 6, 2004 Mazda 3, and 2003 Mazda Protege5. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Check and repair or replace any faulty parts. Inspect piston check ball for leakage and sticking. Check for worn snap ring.
  2. Check for broken or weak return springs. Check spring and retainer assembly for separation or deformation.
  3. Measure drive plate facing thickness in 3 places. Calculate average value. Standard thickness is 0.063" (1.60 mm). Replace drive plates (friction discs) if thickness is less than 0.057" (1.45 mm).
  4. Measure clutch spring free length. See Fig 1. Standard spring free height is 0.677" (17.2 mm). If spring free height is less than 0.598" (15.2 mm), replace spring.
  5. Ensure air flow is present when applying air pressure through fluid passage. Maximum air pressure is 57 psi (4.0 kg/cm2 ). Replace forward clutch drum and turbine shaft if damaged or malfunctioning.
