Pre-Disassembly Backlash Inspection

Install left and right axle shafts into differential. Support axle shafts on V-blocks. See Fig 1. Measure backlash of both pinion gears. Backlash should be 0.002-0.005" (0.05-0.15 mm). Maximum service limit is 0.020" (0.50 mm). Rebuild or replace differential assembly if backlash is not as specified.
