Stall Speed Test: Preparation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda 626 and 2001 Mazda 626. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Check and adjust coolant, engine oil and ATF levels. Warm engine and transaxle to operating temperature. Block front and rear wheels on both sides. Set parking brake. Connect tachometer to engine. Ensure engine idle speed and ignition timing is correct. See appropriate ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.

CAUTION: Stall speed test generates high ATF temperatures. DO NOT hold throttle open at stall speed for more than 5 seconds. Allow engine to idle in Neutral for at least one minute to cool fluid between each test.
