Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda 626 and 2001 Mazda 626. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Check for related service bulletins. Repair as necessary. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect transaxle 10-pin connector and check connector for damage, pulled out terminals or corrosion. Repair as necessary. If transaxle connector is okay, measure resistance between chassis ground and transaxle connector terminal "G". See Figure. If resistance is 9-18 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 9-18 ohms, check pressure control solenoid connector for damage, pulled out terminals or corrosion. Repair as necessary. If pressure control solenoid connector is okay, measure resistance between chassis ground and pressure control solenoid terminal "A". If resistance is 9-18 ohms, replace transaxle internal harness. If resistance is not 9-18 ohms, replace faulty pressure control solenoid.
  2. Disconnect PCM connector and check for damage, pulled out terminals or corrosion. Repair as necessary. If PCM connector is okay, check continuity between PCM harness connector terminal No. 81 and transaxle harness connector terminal "G". See Figure and Figure . If continuity exists, leave transaxle connector disconnected and go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in affected circuit between PCM and transaxle.
  3. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using a DVOM, check for voltage between chassis ground and transaxle 10-pin harness connector terminal "G". See Figure. If voltage is present, repair short to power in affected circuit between PCM and transaxle. If voltage is not present, turn ignition switch to OFF position and check for continuity between chassis ground and PCM harness connector terminal No. 81. See Figure. If continuity exists, repair short to ground in affected circuit between PCM and transaxle. If continuity does not exist, check connectors, terminals and wiring harnesses for intermittent concern.
  4. Start engine. Road test vehicle in first gear with gearshift lever in "D" position. Go to next step.
  5. Bring vehicle to a gradual stop. Perform self-test on PCM and ensure serviced DTC does not repeat. If serviced DTC resets, repeat previous step. If serviced DTC resets again, replace PCM.
