Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda 626 and 2001 Mazda 626. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Record FREEZE FRAME PID data. Check for related service bulletins. Repair as necessary. Connect scan tool to DLC. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, access TSS PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. Note TSS PID value. Start engine and allow it to idle. Again, note TSS PID value. TSS PID value should be zero RPM with ignition switch turned to ON position and 600-700 RPM at idle. If TSS PID value is as specified, check connectors, terminals and wiring harnesses for intermittent concern. If TSS PID value is not as specified, check input/turbine speed sensor connector for damage, pulled out terminals or corrosion. Repair connector as necessary. If connector is okay, go to next step.
  2. Inspect input/turbine speed sensor. See INPUT/TURBINE SPEED SENSOR  under COMPONENT TESTS. If input/turbine speed sensor is faulty, replace sensor. If input/turbine speed sensor is okay, remove sensor and inspect sensor pickup for contamination. Clean and reinstall sensor. If sensor is not contaminated, disconnect PCM connector and check for damage, pulled out terminals or corrosion. Repair as necessary. If PCM connector is okay, check continuity between input/turbine speed sensor harness connector terminal "A" and PCM harness connector terminal No. 23. Also, check continuity between input/turbine speed sensor harness connector terminal "B" and PCM harness connector terminal No. 84. See Figure. If continuity exist on both circuits, go to next step. If continuity does not exist on either circuit, repair open in affected circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  3. Check for continuity in input/turbine speed sensor circuits between chassis ground and input/turbine speed sensor harness connector terminals. If continuity does not exist at either terminal, check connectors, terminals and wiring harnesses for intermittent concern. If continuity exists at either terminal, repair short to ground in affected circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  4. Start engine and allow it to idle. Using scan tool, access VSS PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. Road test vehicle with VSS PID value at 25 MPH for 5 seconds. Go to next step.
  5. Bring vehicle to a gradual stop. Perform self-test on PCM and ensure serviced DTC does not repeat. If serviced DTC resets, repeat previous step. If serviced DTC resets again, replace PCM.
