Diagnostic Procedure

- Record FREEZE FRAME PID data. Check for related service bulletins. Repair as necessary. Ensure all appropriate connections are clean and tight. Repair as necessary. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to DLC. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, access TFT V PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. If TFT V PID is between 0.1-4.9 volts, check connectors, terminals and wiring harnesses for intermittent concern. If TFT V PID is 4.9 volts or more, leave scan tool connected to DLC and go to next step. If TFT V PID is .1 volt or less, leave scan tool connected to DLC and go to step 5.
- Ensure all appropriate connections between TFT sensor and PCM are clean and tight. Repair as necessary. Disconnect transaxle 10-pin connector. See Figure. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, monitor TFT V PID while connecting a jumper wire between transaxle harness connector terminals "I" and "J". See Figure. TFT V PID should change from 4.9 volts or more to .1 volt or less when jumper wire is connected. If TFT V PID changes as specified, go to next step. If TFT V PID does not change as specified, leave transaxle 10-pin connector disconnected and go to step 4.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove transaxle valve body cover. Disconnect TFT sensor connector. Check TFT sensor connector for damage, pulled out terminals or corrosion. Repair connector or replace TFT sensor as necessary. Using a DVOM, check continuity of TFT sensor circuits between transaxle connector and TFT sensor. If continuity exists, replace TFT sensor. If continuity does not exist, repair or replace internal transaxle wiring harness.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect PCM connector. Check PCM connector for damage, pulled out terminals or corrosion. Repair as necessary. Reconnect PCM connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between chassis ground and transaxle harness connector terminal "I". If voltage is not 5 volts, repair open in affected circuit between PCM and transaxle. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If voltage is 5 volts, turn ignition switch to OFF position and check continuity between chassis ground and transaxle harness connector terminal "J". If continuity exists, check connectors, terminals and wiring harnesses for intermittent concern. If continuity does not exist, repair open in affected circuit between PCM and transaxle. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect transaxle 10-pin connector. See Figure. Check transaxle connector for damage, pulled out terminals or corrosion. Repair as necessary. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, access TFT V PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. If TFT V PID changed to 4.9 volts or more when transaxle connector is disconnected, go to next step. If TFT V PID does not change to 4.9 volts or more when transaxle connector is disconnected, turn ignition switch to OFF position and check continuity between chassis ground and transaxle harness connector terminal "I". If continuity does not exist, check connectors, terminals and wiring harnesses for intermittent concern. If continuity exists, repair short to ground in affected circuit between PCM and transaxle. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove transaxle valve body cover. Disconnect TFT sensor connector. Check TFT sensor connector for damage, pulled out terminals or corrosion. Repair connector or replace TFT sensor as necessary. Using a DVOM, check continuity of TFT sensor circuits between chassis ground and TFT sensor harness connector terminals "A" and "B". If continuity exists at either point, repair short to ground in affected circuit or replace internal transaxle wiring harness. If continuity does not exist at either point, replace TFT sensor for internal short to ground.
- Start engine and allow it to idle. Using scan tool, access VSS PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. Road test vehicle with VSS PID value at 12 MPH for at least 2 minutes. Go to next step.
- Bring vehicle to a gradual stop. Perform self-test on PCM and ensure serviced DTC does not repeat. If serviced DTC resets, repeat previous step. If serviced DTC resets again, replace PCM.
