Diagnostic Procedure

- Record FREEZE FRAME PID data. Check for related service bulletins. Ensure all appropriate connections are clean and tight. Repair as necessary. Start engine and allow it to idle. Measure battery voltage. If battery voltage is less than 10 volts, repair charging system concern. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. If battery voltage is 10 volts or more, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect 104-pin breakout box to PCM and harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between chassis ground and breakout box terminals No. 6, 7 and 9 with gearshift lever in specified position. See TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH CIRCUIT CHECK table. If voltage measurement is as specified with gearshift lever in appropriate position, check connectors, terminals and wiring harnesses for intermittent concern. If voltage measurement is not as specified with gearshift lever in appropriate position, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between chassis ground and breakout box terminals No. 6, 7 and 9 while slowly moving gearshift lever from "P" to "L" position. See TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH CIRCUIT CHECK table. If voltage measurement changed momentarily while moving gearshift lever slowly from "P" to "L" position, adjust TR switch. See appropriate SERVICING article. If voltage measurement does not change momentarily while moving gearshift lever slowly from "P" to "L" position, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect TR switch connector. Check TR switch connector for damage, pulled out terminals or corrosion. Repair as necessary. Inspect continuity of TR switch internal circuits. See TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. If TR switch is faulty, replace switch. If TR switch is okay, check for battery voltage between chassis ground and TR switch harness connector terminal "A". See Figure. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in affected circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Disconnect PCM connector. Check PCM connector for damage, pulled out terminals or corrosion. Repair as necessary. Check for continuity between PCM harness connector terminal No. 6 and TR switch harness connector terminal "B". Check for continuity between PCM harness connector terminal No. 7 and TR switch harness connector terminal "C". Check for continuity between PCM harness connector terminal No. 9 and TR switch harness connector terminal "G". If continuity exists on all circuits, check connectors, terminals and wiring harnesses for intermittent concern. If continuity does not exist on any one circuit, repair open in affected circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Start engine and allow it to idle. Using scan tool, access RPM, VSS and TR PIDs from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. Road test vehicle in each range ("D", "2" and "L") with RPM PID value at 530 RPM or more, and VSS PID value at 12 MPH or more for at least 2 minutes. Go to next step.
- Bring vehicle to a gradual stop. Perform self-test on PCM and ensure serviced DTC does not repeat. If serviced DTC resets, repeat previous step. If serviced DTC resets again, replace PCM.
