Test F: Turbine Shaft Speed Sensor & Output Shaft Speed Sensor

NOTE:
After each service or repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components. Clear DTCs and repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)
under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Ensure all EEC-V systems are working properly and DTCs are no longer present.
- Ensure transaxle harness connector is in acceptable condition. Repair as necessary. Ensure transaxle harness connector is fully seated. Connect NGS tester or equivalent to DLC. Turn ignition on. Select PID DATA MONITOR and record. If vehicle enters PID DATA MONITOR mode, remain in mode and go to next step. If vehicle will not enter PID DATA MODE, see SCAN TOOL UNABLE TO COMMUNICATE under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- While monitoring either TSS or OSS PID data, road test vehicle. See TRANSAXLE DRIVE CYCLE TEST . Determine if TSS or OSS PID data increases and decreases with engine and vehicle speed, or if sensor signal data is erratic or inconsistent. If TSS or OSS PID data increases and decreases with engine and vehicle speed, clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Road test vehicle. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) . If TSS or OSS DTC or fault is still present, diagnose by symptom. See appropriate SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS in TROUBLE SHOOTING . Go to next step. If scan tool displays TSS or OSS PID data that is not consistent or does not increase and decrease with engine and vehicle speed, check for intermittent condition at all applicable harness, sensor and component connectors. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If TFT PIDs do not increase as transmission warms or decrease as transmission cools, go to next step.
- Ensure ignition switch is turned to OFF position. Disconnect PCM 104-pin connector, and inspect it for damaged terminals, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Disconnect TSS or OSS sensor harness connector. Measure and record resistance between specified breakout box test pin and TSS or OSS harness connector terminal. See PCM-TO-TSS & OSS SENSOR HARNESS OPEN CIRCUIT TEST
. If resistance readings are less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance readings are 5 ohms or more, repair open circuits. Connect all components. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES
under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)

Measure and record resistance between specified breakout box test pin and TSS or OSS harness breakout box test pin. See PCM-TO-TSS & OSS SENSOR HARNESS SHORT CIRCUIT TEST
. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If any resistance reading is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short circuit. Connect all components. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES
under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)
under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.PCM-TO-TSS & OSS SENSOR HARNESS SHORT CIRCUIT TEST

Ensure TSS sensor harness connector is disconnected. Connect transmission tester to TSS or OSS sensor component connector. Connect voltmeter leads to appropriate tester TSS/OSS sensor jacks. Set voltmeter to 20-volt AC scale. Perform drive cycle test. See TRANSMISSION DRIVE CYCLE TEST under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. If voltage increases with vehicle speed, replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect all components. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If voltage does not increase with vehicle speed, go to next step.
- Connect ohmmeter leads to transmission tester TSS/OSS sensor jacks. Resistance should be 140-290 ohms for TSS sensor or 503-1010 ohms for OSS sensor. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace TSS or OSS sensor as needed. Repeat step 5 .
- Check for continuity between transmission tester TSS/OSS sensor jacks and tester BAT (-) jack. If continuity does not exist, go to next step for TSS or step 10 for OSS. If continuity exists, replace TSS or OSS sensor. Repeat step 5 .
- Remove TSS sensor from transaxle. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. Determine if TSS sensor is magnetically attracted to a ferrous metal surface. If TSS sensor sticks to ferrous metal surface, go to next step. If TSS sensor does not stick to ferrous metal surface, replace TSS sensor. Connect all components. Repeat step 5 .
- With TSS sensor removed, inspect condition of exciter wheel. Rotate engine with remote starter switch and ensure all 4 teeth of exciter wheel are not damaged. Replace exciter wheel if any teeth are damaged. See appropriate OVERHAUL article. Repeat step 5 . If exciter wheel is not damaged, replace TSS sensor. Repeat step 5 .
- Remove OSS sensor from transaxle. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. Determine if OSS sensor is magnetically attracted to a ferrous metal surface. If TSS sensor sticks to ferrous metal surface, OSS sensor is okay. See appropriate SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS in TROUBLE SHOOTING . If OSS sensor does not stick to ferrous metal surface, replace OSS sensor. Repeat step 5 .
