Test D: Transmission Range Sensor

NOTE: After each service or repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components. Clear DTCs and repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Ensure all EEC-V systems are working properly and DTCs are no longer present.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Place gearshift lever in "N" position. Disconnect gearshift lever cable. Ensure TR sensor is correctly adjusted. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. If sensor is correctly adjusted, go to next step. If sensor requires adjustment, adjust TR sensor and clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Place gearshift lever in "D" position. Reconnect gearshift lever cable. Adjust as required. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. Go to next step.
  3. Ensure ignition switch is turned to OFF position. Place gearshift lever in "P" position. Disconnect TR sensor harness connector. Inspect component and harness connector terminals. Repair as needed. Using DVOM, connect positive lead to terminal No. 5 on TR sensor harness connector. Connect negative lead to terminal No. 10. See Figure . If voltage is 4.75-5.25 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 4.75-5.25 volts, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE to diagnose no reference voltage.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 104-pin connector, and inspect it for damaged terminals, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin terminal No. 91 and TR sensor harness connector terminal No. 5. Measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin terminal No. 64 and TR sensor harness connector terminal No. 10. See Figure . If each resistance reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If any resistance reading is more than 5 ohms, repair open circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Remove breakout box and connect all components. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  5. Measure resistance between breakout box test pin No. 64 and test pins No. 24, 51, 71, 77, 91, 97 and 103. Measure resistance between breakout box test pin No. 64 and chassis ground. If each resistance reading is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If any resistance reading is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short circuit. Remove breakout box and connect all components. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  6. Install TR sensor overlay on transmission tester. See Fig 1 . Connect tester to TR sensor. Check continuity and resistance in all positions. See Fig 2 . If TR sensor does not operate within specification, replace TR sensor. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. Connect all components. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If sensor operates within specification, go to next step.

  7. Monitor transmission tester indicator lights while moving gearshift lever through all positions. If indicator light display matches gearshift lever position, replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect breakout box and clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Go to next step. If indicator light display does not match gearshift lever position, replace TR sensor. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. Connect all components. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  8. Monitor transmission tester indicator light while moving gearshift lever to "R" position. Verify if back-up lights are illuminated. If indicator light display matches gearshift lever position and back-up lights operate correctly, system is currently operating correctly. If indicator light display does not match gearshift lever position and/or back-up lights are not illuminated, replace TR sensor. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. Connect all components. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
