Test B: Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor

NOTE: After each service or repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components. Clear DTCs and repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Ensure all EEC-V systems are working properly and DTCs are no longer present.
  1. Check transaxle harness connector. Inspect connector for damaged terminals, corrosion and loose wires. Ensure transaxle connector is fully seated. Repair as necessary. Go to next step.
  2. Ensure scan tool is connected to DLC. Turn ignition on. Select DIAGNOSTIC DATA LINK, PCM, then PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD. If vehicle enters PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD, go to next step. If vehicle does not enter PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD, attempt to enter PID/DATA MONITOR again. If vehicle will not operate as specified, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  3. Monitor TFT PID. Warm up transmission fluid if cold, or allow transmission fluid to cool if warm. If TFT PIDs increase as transmission warms or decrease as transmission cools, clear DTCs. Road test vehicle. See TRANSAXLE DRIVE CYCLE TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  . If TFT DTC or fault is still present, see appropriate SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS in TROUBLE SHOOTING  . If scan tool displays TFT PID that is not consistent, check for intermittent condition at harness, sensor or connector. If TFT PIDs do not increase as transmission warms or decrease as transmission cools, go to next step.
  4. Ensure ignition switch is turned to OFF position. Disconnect transaxle harness connector. Using DVOM, connect positive lead to transaxle harness connector terminal No. 3 and negative lead to terminal No. 2. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to ON position. If voltage is 4.75-5.25 volts, go to step  8 . If voltage is not within specification, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect PCM 104-pin connector, and inspect it for damaged terminals, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin No. 37 and transaxle harness connector terminal No. 3. See Figure . Measure and record resistance between test pin No. 91 and transaxle harness connector terminal No. 2. If each resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If any resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open circuit. Connect all components. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  6. Ensure ignition switch is turned to OFF position. Measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin No. 37 and test pins No. 71 and 97. Measure and record resistance between test pin No. 37 and test pins No. 77, 91, 103 and ground. If any resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If any resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair suspect short circuit. Disconnect breakout box and clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Road test vehicle. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  7. Install transmission tester. Set tester BENCH/DRIVE switch to BENCH position. Set solenoid select switch to OHMS CHECK. Connect ohmmeter leads to appropriate TFT jacks. Measure and record resistance. Resistance should be within specification. See TFT SENSOR TEMPERATURE/RESISTANCE  table. If resistance readings are within specification for specific temperature, either warm up transaxle or allow transaxle to cool to measure resistance at different temperatures. If resistance readings remain within specification, go to next step. If resistance readings are not within specification, replace faulty transmission control solenoid body assembly. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.

  8. Check continuity between BAT (-) tester jack and TFT sensor jacks. If continuity exists, replace faulty transmission control solenoid body assembly. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If continuity does not exist, replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Road test vehicle. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
