Drive Axle Shafts: Disassembly

  1. Secure axle shaft and CV joint into a soft-jawed vise. Remove inboard axle shaft boot clamps. Slide inboard boot back off of CV joint housing. Separate tripod joint from inboard CV joint housing. If reinstalling original inner joint, mark tripod joint and axle shaft for correct installation.
  2. Remove and discard snap ring. Remove tripod joint. Remove inboard axle shaft boot from axle shaft.
  3. Turn axle shaft over and resecure into soft-jawed vice. Remove outboard axle shaft boot clamps. Slide outboard boot back off of CV joint housing. If reinstalling original outboard CV joint, mark outboard CV joint and axle shaft for correct installation.
  4. Using a soft-face hammer, separate outboard CV joint by gently tapping it off axle shaft. Remove axle shaft bearing retaining snap ring and discard. Slide outboard CV joint boot off from axle shaft.
